Thuram, Zidane, Viera, Makelele and Barthez are still showing hunger for more. These experienced generals keep on inspiring their younger men.
In the good old days Goa's Dempo Sports Club and Vasco sports Club had built fabulous reputations for fielding outstanding defenders year after year. Soccorro Coutinho, Mahesh Lotlikar, Nicholas Pereira, Rosario Rodrigues and David D'Souza were unbeatable in the era when Armando Colaço was at his peak as playmaker and striker in the Dempo set up.
In the mid 1960s to the mid 1970s Vasco Sports Club had a fine brigade of defenders from Kerala. Sathyan, Bharathan, Shivraj, Ambrose and Chathuny were well known for their work ethics. Rosemond, Raphael, Sudhir and Nair were the other members of that illustrious group of players from Kerala.
For Vasco Sports Club the legendary Goanese quartet of Andrew, Bernard, Catão and Domnic took care of the scoring. The defence and supply lines were in the safe hands of the Malyalees. Kerala still keeps on producing top footballers.
