Santhi's problem ...
by M. Shankar on Dec 19, 2006 07:13 PM

A grateful nation, particularly the people of Tamil Nadu had just hailed Santhi for her commendable performance at Doha. And in spite of her just revealed problem, she deserves all the praise and congratulations from a nation starved of sports personalities. One small suggestion ... why don't we leave her alone. Why should the media highlight something for which you can't hold her responsible?

I must say the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Dr Kalaignar Karunanidhi deserves all appreciation for going ahead with the award of Rs.15 lakhs and doing Santhi the proud honour. She needed the appreciation, not just for her sporting talents, also because she is from the poorest sections of the society. Her courage does need all the encouragement. How much effort and dedication she must have put in?

Also, how come no one ever advised her appropriately, instead of leading her into a sad plight like this. Just after all the fame, why was she being put through this travail. What were the officers and others involved doing all these years?

Santhi should not bother - she hasn't brought in any shame like drug-abusing sport stars. Good wishes.

And, thanks to the CM again. He did right!

Support for Shanthi
by Dennison on Dec 19, 2006 06:49 PM

Being a proud Indian with Nationalist spirit,I wholeheartedly support Shanthi.she has indeed made us Indians proud. I was watching the race and what a superb effort to come from 4th position to 2nd position in the finishing stages.Hats off to Kaligniar who gave the promised 15lakhs without anynifs and buts. Our Chief minister has recognised her achievements. Now our national athletics federation should come out in support of her.Shanthi dont worry we Indians are with you.People like her with no 'Sugar Daddies' should be given support.where are the women organisations which preach about women empowerment all crap??

by Mridula Joshi on Dec 19, 2006 06:13 PM

i agree that a separate option in addition to the standard M/F should be made available.
but hadn't the govt done something in this regard...or it it available only with respect passports?
i fully support santhi. we cannot treat her as invisible or non existant. she must have some sence of belonging to a community/group.she's a human being like us and more importantly one who has positively channelised her energies and efforts

Minorities ....
by raja on Dec 19, 2006 06:04 PM

This is totally ridiculous. The govt must take all necessary possbile steps for such minorities. Since we are now heading to new century with powerful India, we have to look ahead of any country.
The govt should reconsider the situation like this and they must include in the Indian Penal Code for the sexual minorities.

sexual minorities back
by santhi R on Dec 19, 2006 05:26 PM

When someone is able to achieve the achievement has to be recognized and nothing to look into the sex, anyway Santhi is not an animal whether she is a woman or man no one is bothered. Will the same hold good for Sania or Sachin ? If they had the same problem it would not at all be so much debated and they would not have been exposed .

Santhi or Santh?
by TG on Dec 19, 2006 05:14 PM

This has to be tackled at the basics. There must be a category called trans-gender in all fields of life like education, vocation and sports, so that such persons are not discriminated against. Till then, though we may feel sorry for such people, there is little we can do for them. But perhaps we can begin by treating them as human beings first and the member of a particular sex next.

It does not matter if Shanti is a full woman or not. It is time the world recognized the existence of the third sex. They are equally good if not better than so called normal men or women and in all speheres of life and they are not asking for reservation like other minorities, all they want is recognization. God has made all of us including the Hijras, gays or call them whatever name you want.

It is not fair
by David on Dec 22, 2006 05:27 PM
It is not about human right or minority right. It is about fairness for other woman athletics. How about let "she" competes with men if "she" is half woman and half man? I have seen "her" on TV. "Her" movement and gusture are more like a man than a woman. Be rational and reasonable. Be not emotional.
