This is becoming a routine thing with Sania. She is talented and looks quite mature when she gives the press conferences but when you see her play, you can clearly notice that her intelligence is limited to the press box while her talent is undone by poor shot selections at crucial stages of the match.
It was indeed a pretty tough match. Sania looked good in the first set. Then suddenly she was out of her place in the second and third. Though her ground strokes are terrific she needs a bit of control on them to avoid the unforced errors which ultimately cost her the match. In fact this is her favourite surface. Hope she learns from how it feels losing after having a good start. She looked overweight and wasn't as flexible as her opponent and needs to gain more fitness. She has been the lone pride of the country on the WTA tour and wish all the good luck for her future!
Journos should use a "Sania Mirza story generator...which basically says through in the first round, crsah out in the second round. Less pressure on SM would help - but these insane sports writers make out as if she is the best player on the court since Martina/Steffi/Chris..(take your pick)..and that's got to be tough on Sania - having to try and live up to these idiots expectations.
It is plainly visible that Sania is 'already' past her best. Just another hot air balloon that burst prematurely even before it took off. We Indians are to blame purely for this. We are all so starved for a star, that we build up the hype so much, that when it falls, it feels like a big let down. Unfortuantely, I do not think Sania has it in her to make it to the top. We just need to agree that in this sport, we have just mediocres, and also-ran's. Unless Sania changes her stupid mindset ("That is how I play, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but I will not change my game") she is going only one place - down! That combined with all the advertisement campaigning which she has been giving more interest in will seal the fate!
This happens with almost every indian sportsperson - first they show promise and then they fade away. It is interesting to note how Sania's tennis level has dropped this year as compared to 2005. She had a better record in each of the Slams last year. After 2005, what happened, she was made a demi-god in india, a superstar of sorts appearing on cover of TIME magazine.. and well that was it! Once these sportspersons hit such statuses, it goes in their heads. I mean why cant we produce genuine sports persons? People who want to keep away from the glitz and glamor and strive to do better. I know this has been pointed out before but I wanna say again that it is sad that a country like ours with over 1 billion people can hardly ruffle a feather in sporting competitions around the world. ( i guess cricket is an exception here, but hey... only 10 countries play that game at the top level anyways) Why does it always have to be academics that indians are recognized for?.. Are we destined to be ever remembered as IT and Medical geeks?
please sania concentrate on ads and ribbon cuttings , dodnt waste time on ur hobby thats playing tennis , i know u cant match the other players . so the best for u is to act in cheap ads thats dodnt mean nothing ......thanks
