Shcumacher collided with Damon Hill in 1996 too and crashed out, similar to what he had done in 1997 to Villeneuve. He did that in 1994 and won his World Championship by a single point. In 1996 he lost by a single point to Damon Hill and 1997 he tried that against Villeneuve and lost again. Villeneuve had been critical then itself. Schumacher tried some of his tricks in 1998 but Mika Hakkinen was too good for him. But in 1999 he got injured and Mika cruised to title. 2000 onwards with a superior car and better team tactics he ruled the world. Team tactics also includes asking Rubens Barrichello to allow him to pass and win a race to benefit his title race...

Great Champions Vs human being

I think Villenue is just taking into account the few untoward incidents on the track and has chosen to ignore the personal life/side of Schumacher. Unlike most of the champions in F1 and many other sports he is a complete family man who loves his wife and children and spend most of his off-track time with his family.

It is also worth recalling that Schumacher spontaneausly paid USD10 million after seing divastation of the soonami in Asia and this is the highest contribution from any sportsman or celebrity.

It is very rare these days to see any celebrity who sticks to one wife, not taking to drugs and does so much for charity.

He may be hated by the British because of his on-track clashes with Damon Hill and may be hated by the Canadian because of those episodes involving Villenue and Schumi. But he is hugely popular in Asian, Latin America and most countries in Europe.

Schumi is a champion

It is a case of sour grapes. Come on Villeneuve pass on if your time is over. Your words will not hold water to the millions of Schumi fans who has proved time and again that he is a great and "cool" champion who will go down in history as one of the greatest who ruled the F1 circuit for a long long time to come....

Schumi's Legacy
by Amit M on Aug 18, 2006 12:39 PM

This is for all those who read the article and went "Hmmmm...yes, yes, Villeneuve's right!":

Schumi's been around for so long, that people forget the era in which he started racing was not one in which media image and fair play (forced on today only because of enhanced media scrutiny) were prevalent. He was a pure racer among a field of pure racers like Senna, Prost and Mansell. Early F1, unlike early cricket, was generally more cut-throat than the modern avtaar. While this doesn't excuse Schumi in any way, the 'dirty tricks' were a part and parcel of racing in those days. Villeneuve himself acknowledges that when he says that Senna did it too. The part about 'Senna doing it with more class' says a lot more about Villeneuve and his dislike for Schumi, than it does represent any actual fact.

Villeneuve had what it took to be the best and let it go. Sadly, he's now been reduced to a media favourite for his 'sour grapes' sound bites.

Personality is secondary, I want to watch RACING.

And you can't ignore the fact that Michael Schumacher, for all his faults, is a genius behind the wheel, and the most successful F1 racer of all time.

Schumacher is the greatest driver to grace formula 1 and I am sure he will be remembered for his amazing driving skills. No one can forget how single handedly he revived Ferrari, or his twin titles in a non favored car like Bennetton. Clearly Villenuve has no knowledge of history..... Sorry he Villenueve sucks.

hmm...

Villeneuve was a good racer. but just a good racer. he drove for the hottest team Williams-Renault, and won the championship in 1997. year before him Hill won it for the same team.
when Renault withdrew their engines, Williams struggled, so did Villeneuve. meanwhile a struggling Ferrari began trotting thanks to Schumi. by the time Ferrari started galloping, Villeneuve changed to BAR, still could not even crawl...

yes, Schumi might have been dirty at times, but where was Villeneuve after 1997?

Villeneuve is a JERK
by Cyrus Elavia on Aug 18, 2006 12:33 PM

Villeneuve should shut his trap and stop talking nonsense. Schumacher is the GREATEST EVER and nobody can deny that, the only ones to deny it are those who cannot see Schumi basking in so much glory. The bloody idiot Villeneuve doe not know how to steer a car properly leave alone driving it. Nothing except a way to gain cheap publicity and that too after he has been kicked out of F1 - this is what Villeneuve is trying to do. Thank God he is gone from the sport. The day Schumi retires will be the saddest day ever for F1 because the MEGASTAR of the sport will be lost, the day the LORD OF F1 shall retire. So Jacques, shut your dirty mouth and go bark somewhere else.
