If this block is going to save some lives, it is well justified. I do not mind missing Narain zipping on the F1 tracks, I am not bothered about millions of dollars lost on telecast rights.

The Health Ministry has a moral responsibility in safeguarding public health, and educating the public. It is common knowledge that such "surrogate" ads does have a great influence in changing our pattern of thinking - that adventure sports and cigs are related; though in reality, such relation, if any, is an inverse relation. I congratulate the ministry for taking such a step.

Smoke screen blocks narain on DD

Union Helath Ministry has lost the capacity of judgement. People will not start smoking by seeing the hoarding on race track. They are much interested in zipping cars rather than ads. Time to overhaul the beuracracy & political netas

Well a rule is a rule

Its unfortunate that Mr Kartikeyan is in a sport that is mostly sponsored by Tobacco.

But bending the rule just to allow an Indian on TV which goes against the policy for a healthier India is not recommended. No need to criticise the Officials for this.

Btw if the Government did allow it to be shown on screen then Ecclestone will make sure that there are enough Indian faces so his show is always cleared for TV

terrible

Hi,
this is absolutely ridiculous, instead of banning smoking in public places, colleges and other areas the ministry wants to ban F1 race on DD.smoking is definitely a poison,it should be stopped on roads in India instead of concentrating on what on Schumacher\'s ferrari or any other car.The government has to act smart than becoming a ridicule before the F1 fans. Please think and act this is my humble request to the government.

We appreciate the DDs decision not to broadcast any event which has anyhow related/sponsored by a company related to tobacco.
Money is not the only thing but the principals. Thanks DD.

well done health ministry
by mohit paul on Jun 27, 2005 11:25 PM

i think what has been done by the health ministry is commendable and goes to show that millions of dollars cant buy the values that need to b instilled in cabinets of the largest democracy if it has to save its lungs and we shudnt b criticizing the health ministry for this but rather look at the hypocritic attitude of the f1 boss bernie, for the simple reason that when the f1 camp moves to countries like canada for the annual race over their the law being so stringent the teams such as ferrari have to cover up their sponsors name which are of tobacco companies like marlboro...so well done health ministry it shows that their are still some sane people in the cabinet who know their job!!!

Regarding ban of smoking onscreen.
by Rangan on Jun 27, 2005 11:09 PM

It is a shame on the part of the government to do such things. If they are really serious they should ban cigars/tobacco completely and not play such petty games. Is freedom getting curtailed in India day after day..!!!
