A bright performance by Sania Mirza
by Rohan on Jun 23, 2005 07:09 PM

The match between Sania Mirza and Kuznetsova was not just another game! It was certainly thorough entertainment for the people watching. What wonderful shots were played by both players. It was a treat watching both the players.Sometimes we wont get 2 see these kind of matches even in the semi finals or finals!Sania Mirza gave a really tough fight for her opponent, though she is ranked 70 places below Kuznetsova.India must feel proud by what this young recruit has done in Wimbledon. But personally speaking,i am sad that she has been surrounded by a a lot of hype unnecessarily.Relax guys, she is only 18! Y do u plot to finish her career by so much unwanted talks about her!Just sit back and enjoy the game, she definitely has a very long career.WELL DONE SANIA! WE WISH TO GET MORE GOOD RESULTS FROM U IN THE FUTURE.

Sania could have a bright future in tennis.
by Rakesh on Jun 23, 2005 02:52 PM

Watching Sania play is a pleaure. She is very composed and mature for her age and appears to remain calm under pressure. I say appears to, because she seems to lack just that extra bit of push at the end that would win her matches. She was in the commanding seat in all 3 sets with Kuznetsova, but could wrestle out only one and lost the other two sets.

I think her lack of experience playing big tournaments was the reason for this, as most other experienced players would have won all three sets from such leading positions as she was in the beginning of the sets. I was comapring the match statistics and found that she was at par with Kuznetsova in almost all the parameters. She lacked mostly in her net approaches - 0 of 5 = 0% compared to Kuznetsova's - 11 of 17 = 65%. This shows that she is more of a baseline player and reluctant to play at net (5 approaches only) and moreover, she could not convert any of these approaches to points (0%). This could be one of her major points to ponder.

The mental frame of the player . . .
by T V S Sarma on Jun 23, 2005 01:43 PM

Sania has received a huge grant of 20 lakhs from the state goverment for her training, her being from a royal family notwithstanding. All she's t oshow for the grant is a win in the first round.
What was more pathetic was that before the tournament started, she said that she'd be satisfied if she clears the first round. If that's the mind set with wich she's went into wibledon, that's what will happen. and for that we have to shell out 20 lakhs of the tax players money when in fact she can well afford 20 lakhs and more just from the income from commercial endorsements which are wort more than a couple of crores

Every next door girl is a Sania
by Vasan Thatai on Jun 23, 2005 12:31 PM

I wonder whether Sania Mirza deserves the media attention and accolades. She is like any young girl holding a tennis racket. What is her achievement?. Indian woman to reach second round. Indian woman who played tough to so and so seeded so and so. If one reviews her performance throughout there is anything one can find that deserves the slightest of attention.Yes. She did win few matches. But the win to loss ratio indicates that any next door girl could have achieved the same result going by the law of averages . Plus playing tough to seeded opponent and so on ...has any value. Any rational Tennis lover knows the fact that top seeded players will not defeat an unseeded opponent in the first or second round in straight sets even if they can...because they look at these as oppurtunities for practice and workout. Hence losing 6-4,6-7,6-4 to K'kova does not indicate that Sania closely matches K'kova's performance. There are few tips to be learnt out of these media hype..like
Ask your sis/daughter/mom/grandmother to play a sport like Tennis / Ice skating / Rowing / Gliding etc. the very next year she is a celebrity in India.
Alas! If I could convince my 76 yr old Dadi to play squash.

Sania Crashes out
by Balasubramanian on Jun 23, 2005 09:56 AM

This isn't a surprise.I was glued to the television for the entire match analysing Sania's weakness.First playing at such an important event like Wimbledon she should have got her basics right. The number service faults were just too much.Any coach in the world will always ask your service to be perfect.I suppose she had concentrated on her looks for the day rather than tennis. She was playing reckless tennis. As a player you should know how to cover the court, which was totally missing in her game. The No.6 Seed was making her run to all parts of the court from where there was no return for Sania.Imagine having taken the lead in the first two sets and yet go on to loose them is just not forgivable. She has to learn how to hold on to your serve. She simply didn't have the strength to match her Russian counterpart.Imagine if you fail to cover the entire court at the age of 18,I don't think she will perform any better in her coming years. Also she was getting tired very fast. After every strong forehand there was weak shot from her armour.Rather than doing advertisements and getting herself on par with Anna K,its better for her to concentrate on tennis and become a star like Steffi Graf

Pranay
Sania Mirza
by Pranay on Jun 23, 2005 09:46 AM

The media is definitely to blame for Sania's performance. But more than that I think its her injury. Sportspeople keep getting injuries and its no new deal. They always deal with it and get back in form. I'm sure Sania also will be able to do that. She is a talented player who also has a lot of guts. I think we as part of the public should learn not to put so much pressure on the people we idolise because the players temselves have no time to think of our expectations from them when they are out on the field playing. Such is their focus. I wish Sania all the very best and hope she can fulfill her own dreams and goals. She is making India proud in whatever she does.
