Rajiv Gandhi Award what for?
by Shielesh Damle on Sep 16, 2004 07:25 AM

Dear all,

Anju Bobby George has won Rajiv Gandhi Khel-Ratna Award what for? In my opinion she received her award because she didn't win any olympic award. I think there is procedure in Indian Sports arena that it is fine you loose in olympics flooded with awards for loosing.

by ramesh on Sep 16, 2004 03:26 AM

Anju is deserved for it.
Anybody can recognize the winner. But recognizing aginst an extra ordinary perfomance beside a failure.
The distance 6.83m ,she jumped is beyond our indian race/genetical potentials.
Right?

And the Bharat Ratna for Sports Goes to ....
by Goutom.C on Sep 16, 2004 12:50 AM

...The hundreds of officials who accompanied ( God Knows for what !! ) the Crack Olympic Contingent which we sent to Athens and came back with onr lone ' Silver ' Medal . The Irony is.. Major Rathore got an " Arjuna " award where as Anju George who finished 6th bagged the ' Khel Ratna ' award !!

I know ...there would be many who will jump at me saying that she tried her best !! Well her best is not good enough !! I as a Tax Payer demand to know why IOA & AAFI spent crorers of Rupees of the exchequers hard earned money to send a bunch of non performers to squnder away precious resources in training (In Ukraine?) and other foreign destination , when we actually know that medal hopes are absolutely bleak !
For God's sake don't belittle our country's pride !! Politicians ..please leave the sports fraternity alone . You have done enough damage to the fabric of our society ...dented our pride in every single international forum . We want nothing from you . Do what you want ! Just leave the atheletes alone . Let people who are capable, to handle this . Stay away from as many things as is possible ...we repose little or no confidence on you !God Help us !! ( Specially from you people)

Rajyavardhan deserves.
by VoicingIndia on Sep 15, 2004 11:39 PM

I strongly feel Rajyavardhan Singh, who was the lone winner of "a medal" in Athens, among 1.2 billion people deserves this Rajiv Khel Rathna award.

Anju Bags Khel Ratna award
by Abhinav on Sep 15, 2004 08:40 PM  | Hide replies

I personally think that conferrinf the highest award for Sporting Excellence should have gone to Rajyavardhan Rathore and not Anju . I wont say that her performance as an athlete has been bad or not deserving of National Honour ( In fact her consistency has won her accolades feom all corners ) but still , the highest award should have been for the best performer for the country and that is Rathore.
Let us wait and watch Anju's career graph. If she performs in this manner for the next 2-3 yrs then she can be considered as a deserving candidate for this prestigious award.

Buddy, these awards are for year 2003. Major Rathore was nowhere in the picture then. I would expect him to win the Khel Ratna next year, though.

Khel Ratna - who?

If not winning an olympic medal a criterion ,then surely Rathode who won the olympic silver will be disqualified for the Khel Ratna.

Guys, it is a right decision to give the award to Anju, cuz the performance of last three years in what is taken into consideration. And anyway , Rathore will have almost sure chances of winning this award next year because silver in Olympics is unmatchable credential for at least next three years.

Nonsense
by Seema on Sep 15, 2004 07:19 PM

What is the point of these nonsense award to a bunch of loosers.
In the concluded Olympics none of them able to bring a honor to the country.
These kind of gymmics never ever going to boost the sports in India.
Stop this kind of nonsense and get ready a new generation team where they can deliver something.
