The Greeks played the inaugural match against the hosts and will play the final match against them as well. Congratulations to the giant killers who have created history in European football. These two teams have systematically disturbed the established hierarchy in football. It is a positive message for lesser known teams to aim high and work towards such dreams. The Greeks defended well and at most times, like the¨Portuguese, had half a dozen players to take care of every situation be it in the defence, midfield or in the attack. This robust position switching and swift counter attacks is what makes the Greeks and the Portuguese worthy candidates to perform at the coveted final of Euro 2004. German Otto Rehhagel and his counterpart the Brazilian Luis Felipe Scolari are emerging as the most effective and consistent pair of performers on the international scene. These two are great motivators of men and with their novel and carefully planned methods have transformed the Greeks and the Portuguese into conquerors of Europe. The world knew the good old Greeks as philosophers and the Portuguese as seafarers. But this present lot is that and much more if one were to watch Euro 2004.
Oh come on everyone...enough with the negative comments on the greeks...I saw the game and the Greeks played pretty well. The extra time was all theirs and it was no surprise that they got the goal. During normal time (especially midway through the first half) they totally controlled the match and pegged the Czechs back into their half. Their passing game was simply amazing. They strung in at least 10-12 passes each time they went forward and the movement showed how good a team they were. Of course the Czechs have a better attacking game, but thats because they have a host of international stars very capable of playing the 'beautiful' game. But give it to the greeks please. Watching a group of 11 people play in such a co-ordinated fashion was beauty in itself. Seeing a bunch of outsiders, who nobody gave a chance in hell, humble 6 figure salary owners really made my day. I really really have to say...HURRAH for the Greeks and hope they win the finals!!!
