Dempos need to rediscover their former penchant for scoring goals !
by Dr. Cajetan Coelho on Jan 24, 2004 02:37 AM

Historical literature on Soccer in Goa shows that Dempos rose to incredible fame because of the presence of some high quality goal scorers in their ranks from the late 1960s to the late 1990s. Lovers of football recall with fond affection some of the greatest names who donned the blue jerseys with stunning distinction. Players like the late Sada Asnodkar, the late Nanda Gaad, the late Jayant Dhond, Anand Verlekar, Ramesh Redkar, Nicobar Islander Williams, Bir Bahadur Thapa, Jimmy Machado from Daman, Prakash Naik, Francis D'Souza, Dionisio Trinidade and Camilo Gonsalves were all top class goal poachers. Hard working coach Shri Armando Colaco has moulded the current team well but still needs to translate the overall potential into goals that matter. Step by step the team is making its return to its former glory. Edition Eight of the NFL has so far been the toughest in every way and our hearty congratulations to Dempo Sports Club for topping the NFL ladder at the end of the first leg. Cheers to the AIFF for taking serious steps to improve the overall quality and interest for soccer in the country. We wish all the NFL players a fruitful period of rest and a successful Second Leg.
