by tijco on Sep 23, 2004 07:54 AM

It's high time we stop camplaing of India's recent performance and focus on the next olympics from now on. It's how china ,Japan and other nations are doing. But here in India we start preparing just a month before or so on.And that to like a formality.so how can we exept more than a lucky silver or bronze.

Politics in sport

I ahve read and seen the performance of Indians in Athens. And I got to see the performance of Australia being in Australia during the Olympics. I can sum everything up by giving one example. In March Ian Thorpe failed to qualify for his pet 400m Freestyle as he was disqualified because of a false start. In spite of being the best swimmer in the world there was no pardon in the internal qualifying event as Australians go by the rules and performance and the 3rd best Craig Stevens who is nowhere near Thorpe was chosen as the 2nd swimmer in the event alongwith Grant Hackett to represent Australia in the event. No amount of pleading saved Thorpe as the swimming officials stuck by the rules. Thorpe only took part in the Olympics becaise Stevens decided to step down in favor of Thorpe and the rest is history. So we see how impartial, corruptless, rule abiders and honest the whole sporting system is Australia. Thats why going by population, Australia came 2nd after Oman in the medal tally. 4th position overall with a population of only one and half times that of Delhi is indeed something. Same goes for other countries too. China is already training for the 2012 Olympics. Learn all this.

India's deliverance to Sports.
by Anand C K Shashidhar on Sep 03, 2004 04:16 PM

First of all, I am always proud to be INDIAN. Proudly, I declare that, for in me and around, I have seen excellence, but only in the form of potential. As a sportsman myself, I carefully chose the sport of Rifle shooting, and have been ranked third, twice in the Nationals. In my 6-year career, I have made certain observations and predictions, which have been true, not by guesswork, but purely out of observance & simple logic. To begin, Shooting & such sports are extremely mind & concentration related. There's a big PLUS in this sport, as not much of physical strength is required. And Indians, the race itself, is known better for their mindsets, having given the world 'zero', & accomplishments in such form. So to concentrate more on sports like shooting, more than boxing and judo, should have a better edge. The medal tally reflects our insincere contributions, which clouded by faulty talent searchers, and coaches bring more than shame to a billion minds. Somehow, only the rich & influential get to the National Squads, where training & everything is taken are of. But from the immediate lower level, there is no hope, drastically bringing down the enthusiasm of potential beginners.

Indians are great at excuses. Why should government be in sports? Why we should be in sports? We do not have the passion for winning, nor do we have the physical strength. Let us import some athletes so our gene pool will be improved. That is what we do for racehorses!!!!

India's performance at the Olympics
by devajyoti on Sep 01, 2004 11:48 PM

If a weighlifter sent to the Olympics is not able to lift even once (Karnam Malleshwari), or if a shot-putter fouls in all of their attempts (Bahadur Singh), why were these people sent to represent India? The Indian team, with a few exceptions, were not even ready for the Olympics. I am sure that a lot of officials will not speak about "the king has no clothes". Instead they will say, "at least they tried". Forget it! Don' go if you do go with a killer instinct (as another reader writes) is not there. IT IS ABOUT WINNING!
Why is a country like China, with similar population to India, and similar standard of living, now in the top 2 or 3 countries, while India languishes as a pathetic participant? There is lack of commitment to sports in India. China came from nowhere (about 20 years ago?) to it current high altar state. If Sunil Dutt is a Sports Minister and this is what the Olympics team does, what else is he busy with? The government should either provide the leadership or get out of the way. The change in culture needed may happen with the right leadership and the right incentives.
