Gold for Excuses
by S.Rajappa on Aug 30, 2004 05:34 PM  | Hide replies

Biggest excuse was reports on the medal prospect .The prediction hat we could win upto 10 medals was the biggest excuse, others excuses just followed, probably we have to know ourselves first better before we go for international competition,i guess we are just fit for National and probably SAARC GAmes not beyond that..

I agree with unbiased.
Show respect for champions.
Maybe we should have a training camp for fans and press people to teach them to show respect.

The Great Indian Excuses resurface
by Ramesh T on Aug 30, 2004 05:23 PM

It was really a fun to read the excuses, which seems to be a small school child whom gives out excuses for the failure. This shows the attitude of their mental weakness & low sportsmanship. This is the time as Paces & Bhupati accepted that it was their mistake, because in any sports & game, if one wins, one has to lose. What better reply can be expected that they should had identified the area where they lacked in performance & how it can be improved, so that next time, we can get many medals in Olympic Games. Being the 2 largest in Population, & winning just 1 Silver Medal (Thanks to Major Saab) shows our strenght in the internation events. So, we & our govt. should also take the responsibilites, & work towards improvement and show off better performance in Bejing in 2008.

It is easy with in four walls
by Sriram on Aug 30, 2004 05:22 PM  | Hide replies

Sir ... Don't coment with out undertaing the reality of how tough it is to compete with worlds best with worst training available in the world. It is easy to comment sitting with in four walls. Their are lot poeple like you who can write but it is very few who inpite of risking their future ready to represent india with out much of financial support and bashing from you. If you really have guts raise your voice against the authority and stop going against the victims who represented our country. It is easy to say "you are wrong" but give them a solution of what needs to be done to make it right and fight for them. Else Shut your mouth and be happy for what ever they have done to make us proud.

Dear Rediff,

I enjoy your article but this is not the right kind of articlas i would like to see it or any one who realy understands how tough it is to be a professional sports person in india. Please review your artical and if you have any doubt please contduct a poll from rediff users regarding this artical.

Thanks and Regards
Sriram

Great Indian Excuses
by C D Pereira on Aug 30, 2004 05:16 PM  | Hide replies

Even when we are left far far behind others in nearly all competitive sports time after time we fail abysmally in not waking up in good time & deal comprehensively with all matters pertaining to training & serious preparation.Till the last minute we are undecided with so many admin matters that goes to show that the management of our sports at National level is not in competent hands!Just as in academics we have good talent spotting arrangement, there is urgent need to revamp our training facilities, Organisation &ALL Admin aspects.Perhaps it is time to involve the Armed Forces to take up the responsibility effectively if not in all the sports but at least some to begin with, & enlarge the scope later if good results accrue.

I agree with Sriram. All that glitters is not gold. The way our platinum girls competed in 4*400 relay semi finals to reach finals made my day.

Rediff : If India has to improve its performance in future you can take the first step by telling this author to improve or leave. Thanks

Icing on cake

It was interesting to read this piece and I totally agree with your assessment that our athletes are only good at making excuses. One more thing which could be highligthed in your article is sport minister's assessment of our performance. Mr. Dutt made a comment India's performance in Olympics was fine. It's not a mean achievement to finish sixth or seventh at Olympics. The most hilarious argument I have heard in ages was when he said look at Marion Jones inspite of all the infrastructure available she could only finish fifth, just one place ahead of Anju George. I am sorry Mr. Dutt, you are wrong in defending the performance of our athletes. It is sad to note a person he is heading the ministy and someone who should be taking some serious decision on state of affairs is expressing satisfaction.
More than the performance of athletes, it's this statement and the attitude which is disappointing.
Mr. Dutt, the real problem is lack of infrastruture and we must admit that we don;t promote sports in our society.
Rather than being satisfied with this disappointing results, we should look up to China and other asian countries S. Korea and even Thailand ( as they also got two golds).

Come on guys. Lets admit it. India lacks a sporting culture from top to bottom.Period. We all try to put the blame on someone or something but the fact is the Govt, the sports big bosses, the media, the big companies, the general public and to some extent the atheletes themselves are to be blamed. So as long as all of us dont change India will always be at the bottom in Olympics

Tauruss remedy is worse than the problem. You do not keep throwing money on a dud. You start thinking fresh. We Indians always want handouts, we claim to have pride, would not be seen with a begging bowl in our hand, but we are beggars at heart. We always want the government to provide us funds. Look at Sudan, Ethiopia, or Jamaica, how do their athletes perform? It is our culture, our gene, our Karma. Mr. Dutt was saying what is expected of him. You do not have to denounce our representatives in public. You take them in private and beat the hell out of them.
