Dont blame the defence
by DC on Aug 27, 2004 01:28 PM

Dhanraj -

For once do not blame the Indian defence for its performance. It was awfully clear througout the tournament that it was the Indian attack which was in ruins and could not hold onto the ball, let alone enter the opponet D or score!! In these circumstances, when the Indian forward line was feeding the ball to the opponent's defence and they were under no pressure and could put more players forward in the Indian half, the Indian defence stood strong and withheld as much onslaught as they could.
Yourself, Prabhjot, Baljeet need to be shown the door at the earliest.. You have the balls to comment about others in your team when you yourself only gained entry into the team based on politics and not your performance. Any avid hockey follower knows that for the last 2 years, you dint even do anything to deserve a place in the Indian team, and yet you were there and now talk about the defence and put the blame conveniently on others.

You need to be thrown out of Indian hockey, let there be no mistake about it.

Time to ask questions from administrators
by M K Jagga on Aug 27, 2004 12:21 PM

It is normal for us to feel miserable and blame the players for their dismal show.

However, do we expect the players to keep themselves motivated despite the way indian hockey is run by IHF?

How and when was team selected? It was selected by a panel which which was formed on same day. The spokesman was not able to answer as to why those selected were in team and others were not.

Do we think that the way IHF is run (as a personal fiefdom of Mr. Gill and cronies) does not affect our players motivation, training levels, psychological makeup etc.

Same is also true of other associations and federations.

Our Hockey team at Athens
by Rajesh on Aug 27, 2004 10:57 AM

I watched the Indian Hockey team loosing to Pakistan at Athens. Not a single shot by the Indians at the Pak goal almost till the end of the match tells you the story of how badly we played. I thought there was only one team playing Hockey and that was not India!

If containment was our aim, we should not be playing hockey at all! If attack was the motto, there was no evidence that we followed the motto.

I suggest we all read Ric Charlesworth's (the great Australian hockey forward who tormented India and all opponents a decade ago) article in India Today, last fortnight, where he has clearly analysed the chances of our team winning as close to zero. In fact, he forecasted that he would be surprised (although happy) if India qualified for the semi finals! An accurate analysis, including predicting that Australia and Netherlands are the clear favourites to win the title.

Coming back to our team, with all the reports in the media, I think the whole Indian team, barring a few lion hearted players, the cooaches, the managers and the chief KPS, needs to be sacked. Will the honourable minister for sports please listen?

Foul Cry
by gaurav on Aug 27, 2004 09:57 AM

Well This has become banal .My question is what Have u done to the hocky in last 16 years .To be frank we indian are not through professional as far as sport is concerend .Then Players through their tantrum abt the coahces and stuff like that .I would term this as ridiculios .Hope u come to reality soon we are no where in Hocky scene in world .So Instead of draggging the issue that you felt bad or good is irrelvant Since this is jst an emotial trumoil that u r undergoing that is all .but after this phases the conditions would remain same.

when we Indian in particular will start taking the responsibilty of our action on our own and evolve and move ahead of this maliging bussiness

Hockey

This comment of mine is not out of frustration watching the dismal show ..but believe me ,I felt the same when India won their first & only one match in Athens Olympic.

Captain or any player playing for the country should not be allowed to write any column , anywhere while they are playing . I agree money in sports ,other than cricket(time has come to name it as Film sport! )is not there - but it definitely robs the player of their concentration . Definitely , this is not the real reason of the poor show - but may be one .
