Its Not the Game its the Mindset
by Vikash Mehrotra on Aug 25, 2004 06:34 PM

We as a Country and its people have accepeted ourseves as second grade people. We do not have targets in life and hence no plans or efforst to Implement it.

Take the record

Hocky we play like ducks no winning instincts no pressure for performance and we settle down for Draws finally ending up losing in last minutes.

Cricket - We claim to be best batting side no rewards for gussing the right Answer. Dunring my Experiance of 20 years in any match i have not seen more than two Batsman Performning (even two performing is remote)

Archary: was amazed to see the compitiion till the last shot between our young man and the World champion but despite of a lead till the last shot we lost- Reason - he did not had the mindset of Winning he was happy and contended in just being next to the best.

We a country of 110 Crores an all have learned during their entire life to be contended and thz what is the mindset.

Without changing the same we could not and woulkd not win.

We have to set Target and perform to beat the targets

Indians in OLYMPIC 2004
by Tarique Khan on Aug 25, 2004 06:31 PM

I am really very sad and furious to see the decimal performance of Indians at Athens. I don't know why we are not able to send a bigger participating squad when we have population just next to China.

Long live politics but leave the sports at least. I am sure that we have skills in the country areas and small towns, but they only lack support and training. We are too much tangled in a "my man syndrome". This is one of the reasons why we never learn a lesson from the past. Anxiously waiting to watch the Indian squad on the opening ceremony of Athens 2004, I felt very disappointed.

Hockey no where near Cricket

Accept it .... we dont deserve to be in Olympics . I saw all indian matches (to my horror). There has been too much hype around hockey , infact Argentines played better hockey , their trappings were miles ahead of ours. Its all crap when some people harp about too much money beings spent on cricket , now the truth is there to see.

We had enought. What else u want? You have foreign coach, efficient trainer and all other facilities. But u people are not doing your duties. Each and every second u are playing with hopes and high expectations of 100 crore people. The main problem with indian team is they are not ambitious, just playing! that's all

Dhanraj Olympics 2004 Hockey Column
by RaghavanRS on Aug 25, 2004 05:28 PM

Generally a past player of high standing only should scribe tournament analysis.

In the absence of this, we get to see the other and possibly more accurate part of the story from such columns, although it is subject to some undesired effects on the peers of the game. Atleast we are saved from silly and possibly biassed columns from novices of the game, but with a gift of language and possibly political backing.

I feel Dhanraj is reflecting his honest opinion. Those who are game experts probably can take the juice of the column and leave out the rest. I have been following the game with interest since late 50's till date, with enthusaism and latter with deep concern. It is good to see that we are holding the thread in international arena only due to the likes of Dhanraj and hence would read his columns and note the concerns.

It is time non player officials are scavanged out of our sports administation and scripting. Past players of high standing should take their place. Only then can we excpect some decent performances. Perhaps shift away from undue emphasis on Cricket.

For now Jai Hind and blesings Dhanraj & Co.

No more hockey
by pisupati prasant on Aug 25, 2004 04:48 PM

There is no need to send hockey team to any international tournaments. They are spiritless and gutless players who merely surrender to anything. Crores of taxpayers money can be saved by not supporting games which do not add to the country's image.

No Expectations
by All Indian on Aug 25, 2004 04:40 PM

Dear Dhanraj,

No need to take pains in explaining the reasons for debacle. There was no expectation from our Hockey team and no one is disappointed. We have long since reconciled with the idea that our team is totally incapable of putting across good display on a consistent basis anywhere -- be it Olympics, Champions Trophy or World Cup --so please stop mouthing excuses and go back with whatever financial booty you have received.

It is horrible and irritating again and again to see the indian team losing to smaller teams also.
at the end of the tournament there will be a big easy writtern by all the plyers, coach, and the federation.
some times they will comeup with indian team is in learning process. when it will be over..
Now a days i don't like to watch the indian matches already i can predict they will loose the match.
Come on boys don't play like this....
It is really frustrating to see the indian team in this state.

Performance at Olympics
by Satish Kataria on Aug 25, 2004 04:28 PM

Dear Dhanraj,
Good that you have accepted your failure but I wish that you can could be as sincere while playing also.
Time and again I stayed awake all night hoping that this will be time when the team with perform but alas..... What frustrates us is not the team's losing but the way of losing. if i go back to the games against holland & australia , i can not recollect even one instance when Gagan Ajit Sigh could trap the ball cleanly. he was worse than even a club player. The way the defence(Barring Dilip Tirkey) played in the initial games makes one wonder whether is it a club team playing.
To tell you the truth I am not dissapointed by the India team's performance because the team didn't deserved to win any way. i am saying this only on the basis of the display you people put up in various games. I hope the media stops harping about golden era of hockey and become more realistic because first step towards correcting a problem is acknowledgement of existence of problem itself.I hope that soembody puts in a long term plan and if that means not participating in big tournaments for some that let it be that way instead of humiliating themselves and whole country.
