If there is a first for every event and Gold medal as a prize . If some one else from another country can make it .Why cant we as Indians acheive that.

by Raja on Aug 26, 2004 03:27 PM

No. This is the answer. Shobha has done a g8 thing, ok Hats off to her..., but think what others have done. Participaton makes us happy, but winning medals makes us proud.

Olympics

The differences between India and China speak volumes. China has emerged as a world superpower.
We are rooted in apathy. I doubt many of us even bother to exercise on a regular basis, forget about competitive sport. We love to criticize our sportsmen and women etc but are do-nothings ourselves.

Great Column
by Annu on Aug 25, 2004 11:42 PM

I accidentally came across this column one day last week and i have been reading this since then. PT Usha is one of the most respected and most famous Indian athletes . It is wonderful to read her view on the current situation of indian athletes and ofcourse their performances. I hope this column continues after the olympics.

Nice column

Rediff thank you for this column from PT Usha. PT Usha has always been a source of great inspiration.
One of the blackest days in Indian sport was when she was not invited to run with the Olympic torch. This even in one line sums up the complete apathy exhibited by the administration towards the atheletes. The other organisations should do well to learn from Cricket and Jagmohan Dalmiya.

We are weak
by Giridhar on Aug 24, 2004 06:17 PM

We dont lack talent but accept it or not, our sportspersons are mentally VERY WEAK!

Probably, it is easy to sit here and talk and difficult to perform at that level. So, I cannot comment on their performance. But I strongly believe that we should come up with some professionals in each department to make them mentally strong and be up for any challenge! We have to make more Shobhas and Ushas in the future.

I think, it is high time for the Govt to think about our Sports. They should remember that it is not an individual who is loosing they should understand that our countrys reputation is at stake.

Dear Govt please do something. Cricket is not the only sport though it earns most of the revenue.
