Try harder next time
by Lak on Aug 22, 2004 08:03 PM

Though I did not watch this match, the scores tell that Lee-Hesh did put up a good fight. I hope they learnt where they went wrong and improve upon their weak points. We hope to see you create history for India at the Grand Slams and hopefully, the next Olympics.
Some of the readers have slammed the performance and even compared them to cricketers justifying why cricket is more popular. Come on, guys and gals! India has had far more cricket players than tennis players and has been playing for a much longer time. And, there are fewer world-class cricket-playing nations as compared to the sheer number of tennis-playing nations in the world. In the U.S., many apartments have tennis courts just as how Indian kids play cricket on the streets. How many Indian kids play tennis?? Lastly, don't forget - we have won the World Cup only once in recent times and we lost even in the Asia Cup. So, don't be so harsh on them. Let us admit that Indian sports is in a very bad condition. Why are there no swimmers, divers, rowers, gymnasts, fencers, archers and so many other sportspersons who can ensure our chances of winning a medal?
Lee-Hesh, best of luck for the next time!

Lets talk of the competition..
by shubhankar on Aug 22, 2004 01:57 AM

Though their fighting spirit is praise worthy, their professionalism and competitiveness, is doubtful atleast at this juncture. Any nation that is winning a medal at the Olympics, has to be a perfectionist or wait for other's failure. The latter never comes to any participant's mind when they take the ring. Hesh-Lee are not at their best anymore. Lets face it. Its a combination of everything, the nerves, the quality of the game -- not one thing only. I guess the croatians rightly deserve the voctory, as they had the complete combination. No wonder that professional circuits also prove their lack of consistency time and again. And no one better than Leander Paes understands, what they fall short of now, as he has proved on many ocassions before in the Davis Cup, Olympics and ATP or grand slams, that you just can't be an average to excel. Still they kept our hopes alive. The other participants from India are just jokes in this humangous nation. I hope Mr. Dalmiya was governing all the sports in this nation.

Amazingly Played
by yogi on Aug 22, 2004 01:00 AM

That wasn't choking.Yes,we'll have to agree paes-bhupathi aren't fantastic players. They are ordinary talents who've combined very well with a great heart and became a winning combo.Yesterday, they didn't choke. They could've been blamed had they looked flat. But they were spirited and they valued the medal. But unfortunately it wasn't their best day.But still, they showed heart & didn't cave in meekly. They are a rare breed of indian sportsmen who've the will to fight.A look @ leander's comebacks @ davis cups will show he's the one who plays his heart out whenever he plays for india.

Lee-Hesh, The Indian duo that made India proud
by Amar Dave on Aug 21, 2004 08:18 PM

Usually I would say, how could you have a 75% chance of winning a medal (3 out of 4 teams in semis end up winning a medal) and still end up not winning a medal. But I have to say that our Indian boys truly played their hearts out. The Game went on till 1 AM! They fought it out till 14-16! I have never before heard of a game in which the set was dragged out so much. What is important here, is that Paes and Bhupathi gave it their best shot. Sometimes the best shot doesn't work, but many times it does. Also, their performance separates from many other Indian olympians who finish so poorly, that it seems they didn't even try. If, only if every Indian sent to olympics, played like Paes and Bhupathi, we would win many more than just 1 medal. Paes and Bhupathi, you did us proud.

what a waste
by abhishek on Aug 21, 2004 01:11 PM

paes n bhupathy showed yet again y indians are the best chokers in the world. till the quarters it seemed that no 1 could stop them from getting the gold. but they lost heart n determination when it mattered the most. even a bronze would have done a whole lot of good for the millions back home. full marks 2 the croats for holding their nerves till the very end n not CHOKING

don't we have too many statues who did nothing for indian sports?
by rammohan on Aug 21, 2004 11:11 AM

India is olympic zero because
(1) too much underestimation of competition
(2) very poor sports medicine in india
(3) too much bureacratisation & politicisation of sports
(4) out of every Rs.100 spent for sports Rs.90 gets wasted/siphoned off/misused/diverted
(5) too much bribery in selection of sports persons
(6) dismal usage of already created sports facilities / infrastructure
(7) extreme cricket fanatisism by the governments
& people (mob) alike

well played
by pijush on Aug 21, 2004 10:44 AM

though its disheartning that we didn't get any medal from tennis, but the effort shown is great. such a loss won't make a person and country humiliated, like in other events.
gr8 game and effort. only luck was not there.
well played.

good performance of leander and mahesh
by ehtiram razakhan on Aug 21, 2004 10:32 AM

It's sad we lost but the pair put up a brilliant performance and we are proud of them. I personally felt that indians were made to believe by the press that they have won the gold after beating world class players in first two rounds. They relaxed a bit and the result is before us. Never mind, you put up a brave fight.

When we can forgive cricketers so many times, why not you?

Regarding the doping controversy, its hard to put the blame on coach only. Players going for the final frontier should learn to protect themselves. I find Kumari knew what was in store otherwise why was she quiet when sent back?
