Montoya has himself to blame
by Arup Ghoshal on Oct 02, 2003 05:52 PM

Sunday witnessed the Montoya of the last two years, not the Montoya of the last four months. I remember not too long ago reading that Montoya had said he would not change his aggressive style, and that a win meant more than just an extra two points over second place. Clearly he was wrong, and he seemed to realize it himself during the second half of this season.

Cue Indy, and cue the Montoya of yore.

He was too aggressive, knocked Rubens off, and deserved the penalty. If we were to take the championship into account, what would stop a contender from going ballistic and bumping anyone off when they felt like it?

At the end of the day, Juan just isn't good enough yet. It takes consistency to win the title, and Juan is not consistent enough yet. He might be one of the most naturally talented drivers out there, but that's just not good enough. Montoya will no doubt be the champion some day, but he just isn't good enough to be the champion in 2003.
