Major Indian Corporates are wimps!!
by leon on Dec 18, 2003 12:54 AM

It's indeed wonderful that Anju Geoge has finally found a sponser. It is so distressing to realise that major companies like TATA, RELIANCE, BIRLA, JET AIRWAYS, INFOSYS, WIPRO are such wimps when it comes to sponsoring individuals/Atheletes for training abroad. They only like to back sure winners - Cricket, Football, Hockey, Polo, golf etc, where besides cricket or hockey none of the above have been able to bring any laurels despite all the sponsorships, fanfare etc. The corporate are glamour hungry and would like to desperately cling on to perceived glory revolving around these sports - Sports which are supposed to be the passion of the upper crust britishers - Our Indian Corporate bigwigs so desperately want to be the "Brown/Indian Sahibs" - that they ignore their roots and their moral duties towards upliftment of sportsmen who are underpreviledged - by birth, state, caste or any reason what so ever. It is sad..no let me correct myself - It's pathetic!!!

Same story same ending
by Nandu on Dec 18, 2003 12:23 AM

Maybe Bobby George knows Anju George well but Bobby may not know to coach very well. What are his qualifications as a coach ? Does Bobby know what kind of training / medicine / diet athletes at the top level take ?
Same story, same ending, I hate to say this but to me she's not going to win a medal. If she wants to, then she should hire a coach who uses modernized methods and findings to train her.
George Powell helped her to win the bronze, why not take his services assuming he is available.
P.T. Usha made the same mistake opting for Nambiar and we all know that had she been trained well and told how to breast a tape she could have won a medal, but we are like this only, we don't learn from our mistakes.

Anyways I wish her good luck and hope I am proved wrong.
