Dhyan Chand The Magician
by Yugal Joshi on Aug 04, 2004 04:10 PM

A legend in his own class. He has no equal in the history of hockey and there would not be anyone like him.
But I think his son demeaning today's hockey team is not a good sign. If his father was destitute in his end years then thats not today's hockey player's fault. Just because they are earning money which unfortunately Dhyanchand did not do does not make these players less important for the country.

The bitterness is not welcome here.

Born in an era......
by Mahender Bongu on May 14, 2004 09:21 PM

People born in an era when Dhyan Chand was at his peak have been fortunate to watch best hockey ever seen by the sport lovers. A person who was admired by none other than Hitler must have a steely resolve to win matches and give evrything it takes to succeed. Champions are born and live forever and so does Dhyan Chand - In oue memories and in our history. When we remember our politicians like Indira Gandhi and we remember Dhyan Chand we know whom we hold in high esteem. The PM could have cancelled one useless meeting of hers to sponsor Dhyan Chand for whom it would have been an occasion to remember and for the rest of the world - they would have got glimpse of one of the genius to be born on the field.

Ashok how it was possible
by VIJAYENDRA on Aug 29, 2003 05:50 PM  | Hide replies

Spreading the national tricolour on the table, Bauji urged his senior teammates to do or die.

"Marenge ya jeet ke niklenge," he told his team-mates.

How come that is possible in 1936 Berlin Olympics. He was British Indian Soldier.

He retired in 1956. That time 400 Rs was not that bad to take care of family of 14-15 members.

I agree to you that he did not get what he deserved form govt. of India. But he worked & Played for British. Did they gave money or any award NO. India gave him Padma Bhushan.

Mr. Vijayendra,

Dhyand Chand competed for the 'Indian' olympic team. Yes, India was still under British rule, but please understand the distinction between representing India & Britain. There were also some British people who represented the Indian team, but it was the Indian olympic contingent all the same. You should think about the laurels people like Dhyand Chand brought to our country even as it was struggling for freedom. Ashok Kumar may not be spot on with his observations, but the gist of what he was trying to say is important. When you talk about Rs.400 being enough, perhaps you need to do your math and remember that he had eleven children to look after. And why is that you're only thinking about bare survival. After all, he was a national hero.

Regards,
Nanda Kishore

I am fully agree with the views of Shri Ashok kumar.
dadda Dhyanchan was very great player and he was NOT recoginsed as per his capablities by the indian government.May be he didn't live in the time media coverage as of today.
The place where he lived should be made like as
"international centre of Hockey"

Anyway i can say only
"God bless Dadda Dhaynchand family"

Really a sad story!!
by Sivakumar on Aug 29, 2003 03:35 PM

It was really painful to hear the legend's last days. It was really bad from the government in those days who denied to pay for his travel. We should respect those who gave everything for the country. In the sense we should help them financially. Alleast present government should take some decisions on this matter.
