I do appreciate the law and order system that is being scrupulously maintained in foreign countries - at all levels irrespective of rich or poor. Had it been in our country, the policeman on duty looking at the person and understood his celebrity status would have saluted in attention and let him go. In the event of the police officer did his duty and arrested the man, he would have either been reprimanded or got a transfer to a remote place. Money and muscle power in close co-ordination with the politicians and the people sitting at the helm of affairs have ruined our law and order system the one who is always netted and being made to suffer is poor
Some correspondents have suggested the disparities between Indian police and their Western counterparts. But they have forgotten about the 'normal' treatement metted out to Blacks ,Hispanics and Browns for any 'crime' by the police in the Western world especially in the US.And since US is The Best Democratic country in the world having the best laws in all fields, that is why they have covered up the drug offences of more than 100 athletes including that of Carl Lewis.
What a radical difference from Indian state of affairs. In India the 'tu jaanta nahi main kaun hoon' syndrome is all pervasive. Arrest by the police would most definitely have been made in India as well - provided the culprit was a 'common man' as typified in Laxman's cartoons. As far as a larger than life figure such as Carl Lewis is concerned - forget it! All of us at large have become deeply cynical with the Indian police and justice system due to the endemic corruption and rot that has set in.
While the cops did an excellent job in arresting Carl Lewis, what is the fun in keeping the medical reports away from the public? A classic case of having the cake and eating it too!!! As far as the law is concerned, it should apply equally to everyone. No point on giving penalty/punishment to one category of people and adopting a softer stance to another category of people. Ananth
Had he tried doing the same here the inspector would have got suspended for doing his duty and Carl would have got away by paying 100-200 bucks penalty.
Dont know when the indian police become like there counterparts in US and other developed countries
