IAF Chief on Rafale
by Sudarshan Nityananda on Sep 13, 2018 02:29 PM

Even without the Air Chief''s intervention, the vast majority of citizens are convinced that the Rafale is a great choice , because of their faith in our evaluation team and its professionalism. In some aspects the Rafale is deemed superior to even the much touted F-35 .
However, what the public may not be convinced by is the sudden about turn from 126 aircraft to just 36 as a necessity. The IAF Chief needs to do some hard explaining as to how the IAF''s stated need for 126 was watered down to just 36 which appears quite inadequate even to a layman. Dhanoa has himself said we are short of numbers , then why only 36 are being procured ? Also why the IAF has abandoned even the partial self reliance of yesteryear and is going in for fully built imports.Once you go public, you have to go the whole hog and not give partial explanations.'

The Air CHief is certainly right about the Rafale capability since it was after 5 years of trials that it was chosen. Nor do we doubt the competence of the selection committee and pilots. But he hasn't explained why the reauirement came down to just 36 aircraft. Inany serious war there will be losses and the old figure of 126 looks like the right figure.
His arguments regarding the 36 planes is not convincing.

It is of course strange for IAF officers to come public with explanations and this is usually left to politicians. Obviously something is worrying the Dovt.

IAF Chief is being too clever by half
by Vijay Sahani on Sep 12, 2018 03:11 PM  | Hide replies

The question not whether 2 squadrons of Rafale should have been procured off the shelf or not. The questions are :

1. Were defence procurement rules followed by the govt.?
2. Why the did the price increase from 670 crore to more than 1600 crore per aircraft?
3. Why was HAL removed from the deal at the last minute?
4. Why was make in India shelved?
5. On what basis Reliance will get benefit of 70% of the offset clause?

Since Airforce need and also capable of evaluating and can negotiate, defence mnstry in future should only sanction a budget for procurement and leave the rest to AF. That way corruption is avoided. Of course one can say defence cheifs may be corrupted, I feel it is most unlikely.

Technical evaluation had already put it at number 1. So what is the big discussion going on now.
Since it is a govt to govt deal, changes of corruption are insignificant & negligible
The difference between UPA Rafale & NDA Rafale is UPA Rafale was for bare fighter, NDA is fighter with a number of weapon & other systems. Bare fighter would have needed the systems anyways, so final score is the same

Simply because it is Govt. to Govt. does it automatically mean there was no corruption? What if both Govts. were corrupt?

Men In Uniform should not get indulged in Political Decisions !
by vijay kumar on Sep 12, 2018 12:44 PM

I pesonally think that the decision was purely political, hence it would not be wise for the higher hierarchy of the defence forces should comment on this. Needless to mention, the Defence Ministry is probably utilising the shoulders to fire, and to gain sympathy/ justification for the overpriced deal ! I am sure, the men in unform has 'no say' amidst netas & babus !

The IAF chief should kept out from this controversy
by brian crasto on Sep 12, 2018 12:23 PM

Previously Air Chief Tyagi is under investigation for Augusta helicopter scandal. Though the Air Chief Marshal has got all rights to give his views, but to air his views in media would lead to controversy. One thing i failed to understand why Tejas produced by HAL has failed. Secondly Sukhois have also got the same superiority as the Rafaels and were manufactured in HAL at 1/3 the cost. We should reduce the dependency on foreign defence equipment s in the long run as it will increase our foreign exchange and created employment in our country
