Nitish's decline started when he bowed to BJP's pressure tactics and entered into an arrangement of convenience with them. BJP's objective of cutting Nitish down to size was achieved, as Nitish was assuming alarming political dimensions and the same was worrying for the BJP. Now, Nitish's popularity is at its lowest and it is apparently irrevocable. If Nitish really wanted to part with RJD on high moral ground, he should have dissolved the assembly and fought fresh elections with BJP as his partner. This would have been a more credible thing to do. Now that BJP has got Nitish where it wanted him to be, next elections will see Nitish being mercilessly relegated to the background and handing over power to BJP on a platter (a goal BJP would have never achieved in Bihar otherwise).
