Guns Vs Butter at Wuhan

Huge and growing Chinese investment in India, the growing trade and the bright economic future are all nice dreams, but to be practical we must see how useful is their investment to us vis-a-vis themselves; the growing trade is fine but is the trade balance in our favour; finally the Chinese motive behind their honeysweet moves must not be lost sight of. US may have their national interests at heart and may be unreliable in the long run, yet we must keep playing our cards to be close to both the countries. We have no choice but to keep playing one against the other. We are just not self sufficient and militarily independent. -Wing Commander Ravindra Parasnis (Retd)

There was, no doubt, great strategic planning in the Wuhan Summit. The plan appears to be a success all the way. The PM deserves all credit, not to forget the foreign service aides. A job well done. However we can't forget that it suited China to do it the informal way. The agreements arrived in such a summit can be broken more easily. Nevertheless, China has been generous and broad hearted. We must not get carried away, however. China doesn't want to push India into American arms. China wants to prevent India-US-Japan strategic allaiance under any circumstances. No doubt China is not only militarily stronger than India but also enjoys strategic geographical advantage on the borders. They have excellent force multipliers in place with railway connectivity and availability of plentiful reserves. Yet India has developed a good capacity to inflict unacceptable damage on the agresser. Numerically we are the only country which can take on China. Our defeat may be written on the wall but for the aggresser unacceptable damage will be the price to pay. Be as it may, we will have to accept defeat and also suffer severe casualties. That is in a one Vs one combat. The story is quite different if US and Japan are in alliance with us. Hence the application of honey by China to keep us off it. It is wrong to say that the the military does not like peace moves. Who wants to fight and die when there is no need to fight? ....continued in next message ....

Great analysis of the situation, Commander Parasnis. We must always be cautious with China, as they are unreliable. The way they cheated on Nehru, who was saying 'India China bhai bhai' and brokering for peace, while China was silently preparing for attacking India ( 1962), must not be forgotten by our decision makers! One question to you Commander, Are any of the army experts part of the government's foreign exchange decision making mechanism of the present government or earlier?

"However we can't forget that it suited China to do it the informal way. "-- Fully agree with you on this count too. China blatantly violates International Laws ( like Maritime law in South China sea), and will break such 'informal' agreements with greater impunity.
