In the 1970s when I was at an American university, a Sri Lankan (Tamil) student told me that throughout their history, the rulers were afraid of India. He didn't tell me why. Now I know!

More recently, I read somewhere that the Sinhala-Tamil dispute there is about 2,000 years old! I wonder if it is realistic to expect a solution at any time in the future.

Another point which more knowledgeable readers should comment on: I read that according to vaastu shastra, the shape of that island makes conflict inevitable.
