For his contributions to Tamil Film music he should have been conferred with Dadasaheb Palke award atleast 10 years before because such was his mastery over the music composition, but getting national awards require godfathers /patrons in Delhi sarkar.

The Padma Vibhushan award has enriched and glorified itself by going to one of the most deserving and the iconic music composer-Ilayaraja. His orchestration/folk music/classical/western/fusion of the east & west is unparalled. His Bgms have been the lifeline of many Tamil films. Every filmmaker would vouch his bgms are legendary, listen to his bgms alone-a million film tunes can be made. A true legend of India,he towers above the rest .
