The move to do away with Cantonment boards is the work of some mafia in the Defence ministry comprising of civilians only in cahoots with builder mafia and politicians of the BJP. They will make the cantonments into concrete jungles by first cutting down the trees, each of which will fetch 5 lakhs to 10 lakhs depending on its diameter. All natural habitat will be destroyed. Today when we go thro cantonments we see big bungalows with signboards indicating the regiments and the rank and name of the occupant, which is proud to see. Eventually these officers will be shifted to 2 room flatrs and the bungalows will be occupied by IAS and politicians. This should be stopped, cantonments should not be touched
By far cantonments are well kept, well treed and greened with gardens, roads better maintained, less or no plastic littered as also no debris and rubbish allowed to remain unattended. A shining example of this is the cantonment area at Navy Nagar Mumbai not far from where I live. It is a delight to visit, to see parrots and other birds chattering flying, you would find it difficult to find a sight to match the peace and serenity elsewhere in this huge mess the metropolitan Mumbai! Safety rules are enforced, traffic well regulated anyone on a two seaters wears helmets--this is not new but has been instituted 30 years ago! we well know what happens in other places! I am shocked at the Defence Minister for falling prey to the shenanigans of her bureaucrats. It is well known that the worst performers are posted to the Defense Ministry and they hate the army, take glee in causing discomforts to the disciplined military. I would ask Madam Defense Minister to take a closer look at the fabric of life in the cantonments before she distroys.
I am disappointed with the article as well as rediff for publishing it.
The hon'ble Defence Minister has stated that the Cantonment roads can be closed for civilians after following due procedure which is not being done. The cantonment roads have been closed at the whims and fancies of the officers in the Cantonments without following the principles laid down in the Cantonments Act. This is illegal. To close a Cantonment road an advertisement has to be published in the local newspapers inviting objections . This has not been followed .
As my family has served in Indian Army I know very well how the families live alone when the Men are serving on the borders or on other internal assignments. Apart from the families the crucial information and ammunition are also in Cantonment which need to be heavily guarded. It is not wise to allow everyone inside the Cantt Area and put the National Security at risk.

sorry, I don"t agree to your Point, being a Civil Engineer, I had left my young wife,3 children for about 31 years, working in Middle east and various project sites in India. My wife managed everything by herself and never faced any harassment. She was also working as a teacher. We live in Surat,Gujarat. As far as security for ammunitions etc., are concerned, Don"t we hear frequent blasts and fire accidents in the safely guarded areas. Please let us not create special class species in our country. The writer talks about a European Capital, where you can sparsely find people on the streets. Our problem is uncivilised over population. If everyone of us volunteer to educate our fellow human beings, our country can not go forward. How many of us are willing to help our fellow human beings. I am willing, whether are you willing?

Mr. Subramaniam, You didn't go to the gulf to protect the counrty, you went there to make the money. If you did not take your family there its a choice you made. The armed forces is different. They have to leave their families and loved ones out of a sense of duty to safeguard you from the enemies. This is what happens when you make someone who doesn't know the ABC of the subject (armed forces for example here) the defence minister. Not only the defence minister, any of the post of ministries should be held by people from that field only then will we have good governence, education etc. etc. Every thing right now is 1st woman in this post, 1st woman in that post. Make a woman the Minister if she is in the particular field and has the expertise. Don't play with fire you will only live/die to regret it.

absolutely, Agree with you 100%. The soldier goes to the border knowing that his family is safe in the cantonment area. Tomorrow with civilians , terrorists all allowed to live in cantomments, these families will be unable to deal with attacks. which will certainly happen. It is regrettable that the present COAS, Gen Rawat, has been it seems forced to accept the BJP politcians move to free the cantonments from the Army. He should withdraw even it means he is thrown out from his post,

Your points that ministries must be headed by persons knowing about, educated in and having served in the relevant fields are absolutely correct. Today, the situation is pathetic because education ministry is headed by people whose educational qualifications are dubious, false or forged.Defence is handled by a woman minister, who was known as and still does the same kind of talk i.e.a TV panelist, other ministers do not know their area at all and start talking about fitness. A SC lawyer is looking after finance, accounts and money matters etc.

You f.... why are you pointing something else when the topic here is of open cantonment. Was the ministers from previous Government educated. The leader of oldest party in the country says Co cola was made by a person who use to sell shikanji. I think you want such type of people running the Government because they safe guard your community.

Mr Subbu, Try entering any CORPORATES of our country OR Secretariat of any State or premises of any minister.I bet you can't SO why Cantonments? Why can't you leave them alone.? Its shear JEALOSY because in our country 80% are UNHAPPY not due to their misery but due to happiness of remaining 20%.
It is wrong decision to open Military cantonments for general public. It will certainly be serious threat to the residents and other security measures.
