"She had wide-ranging interests and concerns and was not obsessed with power. She sought out people whose views did not converge with hers."

Are you very sure. The Emergency was put in place so that she could remain in power.

We observe that people continue to complain about corruption (particularly against some groups, mostly non-BJP groups) and some political parties do not hesitate to brand Congress as root cause of all corruption in the country.

Has anyone impartially analysed the root cause of corruption? Who is responsible for the corrupt practices to grow to this extent ! Whenever any doubt arises on actions of elected representatives or other public servants on any issue, it has to be raised and it is the responsibility of the concerned to clarify with adequate proof that there was no violation of any of the laid down systems or procedures (that might entail corruption in the dealing / transaction) Various government machineries use public funds (contributed by the general public as taxes), meant to be used for welfare of the society / nation and those in custody of it have to ensure its proper allocation and utilization and must be accountable for their deeds.

But what we find is that no accountability exists. Some groups do not seek accountability at all, while when some seek accountability or raise doubts, they are discouraged from doing it by either shifting blame on to others or questioning the credibility of those asking questions. That action breeds corruption.

Even the media, which is regarded as one of the pillars of democracy, it seems has forgotten its role in a democratic set up. It is one of the primary responsibilities of media to highlight such reported mismanagements and it is ought to bring out the facts before the public. But we miss this. We hardly find the media discussing any issues concerning the nation – like lack of adequate healthcare (even in high profile metros); lack of adequate facilities for proper education; lack of water for drinking as well as for other use; lack of basic infrastructure like roads; lack of facilities to overcome flooding during rains; etc. Moreover, many other issues the society is facing also hardly find any space in the media.

Public funds are misused (including campaigning for elections for the party that is represented at the cost of exchequer); substandard or no infrastructure is provided; no proper check on prices of essential items (due to which artificial scarcity is created as a result of which the prices of essential items spike up); corrective steps to maintain law and order is not taken, etc., etc. and the funniest thing is that accountability is not being sought.

So, the cold response to non-transparent actions of elected or otherwise public representatives have helped such persons to be more aggressive towards their irresponsible approach and we end up having substandard infrastructure / basic amenities with no accountability of those responsible for providing it

Social Media used as weapon. The sustained compaigns against our prime minister Sh. Modi Ji is to misinform affecting our country by the opposition. The manipulation of public opinion over social media has emerged as a critical threat to public life. Disinformation during elections is the new normal. In our democracy including democracies around the world more and more political parties i.e Oppostion in our country are using social media to spread junk information and propaganda to voters. It seems to be aimed at helping / encouraging Islamic fundamentalist/terrorists instead of countering it. Our PM at present in my opinion one of the best India has Elected and I wish he continues to bring all reforms for the people. Corruption in the Bureaucracy have already exploited our country and it needs reforms It has no place to give its opinion except following the order. Sudhir Kataria

Preachings
by hayavadana rao on Jul 23, 2018 11:17 AM  | Hide replies

These politicians have the habit of only preaching. They do not practice themselves what they preach, or say or advice. But they do comment. All these politicians should work for the nation and not with interest to their party,or a family whomsoever they may be.

In fact the 'quiet and reticent' Dr.MMS, when asked by a British journalist about the leader of the opposition being a shadow Prime Minister, replied that there was "No vacancy"- a dumb reply, although it revealed his mind-set even when he was a choice of convenience in a stitched up coalition.

tell the truth'!! Who is there to listen to the truth?
by R ponnabalam on Jul 23, 2018 10:36 AM

to 'tell the truth'is when the truth is listened to or at least when just heard. Why to tell the truth, waste one's energy and time when truth has no chance of being accepted.Nobody had told the truth of what Mrs.Gandhi had answered when Mr.Y.B. Chavan talked of Wanchoo commission report for demonetization till two yrs.back.Mr. Rajiv Gandhi the P.M. summarily bid Good bye to an Indian Foreign Secretary in a press Conference.TRUTH,TRUTH!!One eminent man used the word oofy arrogance for one man and it was in news paper then ;find that out.All in Power are arrogant;pretend otherwise.Otherwise our Govt. offices would have been well liked by people R.Ponnambalam

Why dont jayaram Ramesh show some guts and courage and tell truth about the capbilities, abilities, immaturity, inexperience, lack of knowldge, lack of leadership quality to his party president Rahul gandhi who is sole responsible for the worst ever poll debeacle of his party in parliament election and number of state elections thereafter ? Why senior leaders(?) of Congress tolerate this immature inexperienced and unsuceesful man to head their party without working at grass root level and without deserving the position at all.
