Admiral Nadkarni was one of the finest human being and a great Sailor. He was also a decisive leader, who at a crucial time during Maladiv operations took swift decision to intercept the Rebel ship and save Maladiv. I knew him personally as co-founder of Pune based think tank. He was polite and considerate to a fault and never carried his rank on his shoulders. May his soul rest in peace.
""Unlike 1962 he was not going to be rushed into an action half prepared. He would first get fully ready and strike at a time and place of his choosing. The prime minister and Cabinet yielded.
The services spent the next six months preparing for the inevitable. Shortfalls in equipment and personnel were made up."" . 1971 was a great repeat of 1962- in terms of war preparedness.....Total failure of advanced planning and preparations....Face was saved by the victory.....For six months, rapes and murder continued in East Pakistan, while generals busied themselves in preparing...in 1965, Tanot Mata had come to rescue, while Pakustan was much better prepared...This stupidity was seen during Kargil war again, when Indian Infantry had no snow shoes.

In 1971, Admiral S M Nanda was the only visionary leader......Others lack of preparedness was hidden by the glorious victory.

"not going to be rushed into an action half prepared' "Which enemy would give you time to prepare"?This question was posed ,if not critically, at least as a concerned question by a man competent enough to say so.Well that write up did concede in the words "Sitting away from -------- without all the ---'' there can be justification if at all.I read it in newspaper But being not prepared was !!!R.PONNAMBALAM
Through '71 War we achieved two things, that to defeat Pakistan is a cake walk for India. Creation of Bangladesh, which finishes a great headache in our eastern sector. And finally, Indiraji wiped out the label of coward PM of India, created by Jawaharlal Nehru in '62 War.
What our country has achieved? Nothing....Unnecessarily returned won area upto Lahore, 90000 sainiks..2 crore Bangla refugees which have increased n have become nuisance...we were in position to solve Kashmir problem ...Because of that defeat n interference, Pak is today doing terror activity...Shahadat n victory of Mikitary was marred.....Pak did not return our sainiks n won area....

What did we gain in the war? Whereas we were on very much on upper hand and rightly described by Benazir Bhutto in her book entitled "The Daughter of the East". Whatever problem we wanted to solve, we could have solved and the Pakistan was under immense pressure to agree including Kashmir problem. By creating Bangladesh, we produced another headache though this could have been an autonomous Indian State; similarly Kashmir problem would have been solved and we should not have vacated the area won on the western front. When Indira Gandhi asked General Manekshah in how many days we could Peshawar. He replied in Three days. It is a very sad event that Military Heroes were not given their due respect and honour for the gallantry shown by them. It is in the DNA of Congress to take credit by their Leaders for anything good done and blame the others for loss.
