Meteor
by siddharth on Dec 21, 2018 03:40 AM

Meteor has 150 KM range and it is worlds best and we will get it in Rafael. Each sqdr will have atleast one Rafael carying Meteor. But Tejas will carry ASTRA which has 80 KM range and they are trying to increase range to 120 KM. Also there are other BVRAAM which has 150KM range. BUT main question we need fighters in skys not in making for another 20 years

maybe Mr Shukla is raising the alsrm too early. The Meteor is not the only BVRAAM available. He also exaggerates the range of the Meteor as 200 kms . It is only around 100-150 kms.
India or Isreal may have reasonably good BVRAAM which can be integrated into the LCA and make it a capable plane. The IAF should not be allowed to get away by insisting on only the \"best in he world\", since such a spec is misleading and may not be true anyway.

The Meteor is an excellent missile, no doubt - but considering the characteristics of India's operational envelope, it is largely overkill. 200 km range isn't really essential in the Pakistan context.

If you drill down into the details, and the timing, the logic becomes obvious. And the answer is, DRDO's home grown alternative to the Meteor, the Astra.

Astra is also BVRAAM, and its characteristics are more closely suited for India's operational envelope.

And your numbers are totally wrong.

Meteor range is 100km, whereas Astra is 80km. Lower, but not too shabby.
