Vidia Sir

I send my condolences at the death of a great writer who was born in Trinidad and then moved to Oxford. Of course he was brilliant and had the freedom to write his view point, but I differ about his views. One of the comment he made was about open defecation. Yes Sir no civilized society would like to have that but the whole issue is about water supply. India is a big geography and adopted electricity and piped water supply as soon as independence was achieved. There are enough water sources in India and most of water projects should cater to surrounding areas where it can be ensured that repair can be done quickly. You were brought up in an tropical island which has smaller population and therefore you could attend a college in Oxford but many school children in India have never known about such places and there is age limit for such courses and by the time they come to know about these they have crossed age limit.

Relevance of Naipaul

We, Indians must admit that there are many things wrong with our country and people. Naipaul, in his three books about India only held up a mirror for us. While his 'An area of darkness' and 'India: a wounded civilisation' was severely critical, 'India, it is a million mutinies now' appreciated the resurgence of modern India.
It is surprising that the obituaries mentioned only his Nobel prize and not the numerous awards won earlier (Jerusalem prize, Hawthorne award, Somerset Maugham award, Man Booker prize to name a few).
