Late Mrs Gandhi, as PM of India
by Pemmaraju Venkatasubbarao on Nov 21, 2017 10:42 PM  | Hide replies

I personally believe that Mrs Gandhi deserves all praise for her achievements viz Liberation of East Pakistan, annexation of Sikkim, Nationalization of so many banks, abolition of privy prices etc etc. L & O was well maintained during the emergency. I was in service then and what ever be the perception of individuals, she was at her best and had to sacrifice her life for operation blue star, another bold step taken by her. Late Mr Rajeev Gandhi was better to some extent but Mrs Sonia and Mr Rahul have brought down the image of the Congress party and really they are unworthy of any comparison to Mrs Indira Gandhi who even excelled her father in taking bold steps.

No, it was not. "there was no option to save country from lawlessness" or to save her own seat of power? I think the latter one is correct.

Indira Gandhi: A black and white picture
by palanki narayana on Nov 21, 2017 06:02 PM  | Hide replies

(1) JP did not call for a civil disobedience movement (satyagraha). He incited the army and the police to rebel.
(2) At the end of the meeting in which Maneckshaw opposed PM's wish for an immediate war, the General offered to resign. Mrs.Gandhi was sensible enough to see his logic and agreed to his war plans. Rest is history.
(3) The abolition of privy purses was a denial of a constitutional obligation of the government. Constitutional experts like Palkhivala told her that the sanctity of the constitution was being violated. He also pointed out that the amounts being paid were small compared to the government extravagances like the lavish expenditure of ministers and legislators.
(4) The privy purses abolition was struck down by the supreme court. The government had to resort to legal subterfuge to win the appeal (Substituting 'amount' for 'compensation' and the simply 'derecognising' the princes).
(5) The bank nationalisation only led to loan melas for the gariblog and writing of the bad debts. Now practically all the 20 nationalised banks are on the verge of collapse. The banks cannot penalise the defaulters (rich or poor), hence they are squeezing the honest middle class.

If we go into the annals of the PM's of India we will see Indira Gandhi was by far the best PM Our country have. Abolition of Privy Purse, nationalization of Banks, and Independence of Bangladesh. Like all she has her defects also. They are the Emergency, Operation Blue Star. Thirdly like all the great leaders she believed and have sycophants. She never have faith in any body.

Giving too much credit not Indira for 1971 is acceptable, but giving too much credit to Rahul is disgusting.

Did Rahul Gandhi get any credit from anyone? His achievements, if any are going to be in future (assuming he has a future).

While undoubtedly Field Marshal Sam Bahadur was the architect of victory for having refused to the then PM but equally relevent is the fact that the then PM listened to and accepted the advise of a more qualified person unlike todays netas.

And no Army General can go ahead without his Boss's( Read PM's) orders. In an interview General Manekshaw has said that ' I have seen many an angry women including my own wife but none as as angry as Indira Gandhi when she told me we want a Bangladesh at any cost" She meant busiess. As far as strategies go obviously that IS a General's Job! And thank the good lord that the PM and the country was fortunate to have Manekshaw. And PM had the sense to know that she needed to go by the man with this experience in his field and thinking and reading of the situation. She knew he was a professional and knew better. But it was she who recognised it. Yes that kind of mutual respect and understanding and professionalism(?!) is not found today in Politics. Also last but not the least she had a lot of faults and made lot of mistakes but at the time if anyone were to ask who would you rather have as PM no one had an answer. As PMs go and Politics go so far she is the one who had it all pat down.
