I used to travel by Mumbai local and used Elphinstone bridge for 8 years. I have boarded a local train in which i had to dangle on the footboard in an overcrowded train for many years. I have volunteered for Ganpati pandals, religious processions, tickets anywhere where there is a crowd. I have also undergone fire safety training and disaster rescue training for a short while. I have carried out many "Wear a helmet" campaigns.
I can say with a fair amount of confidence that we Indians do not fear death. No one understands what queue means. No one has the patience to wait at a signal of 30 seconds. There are so many events I have witnessed that I have become numb telling people. So many times I have been abused for telling people not to spit from a running train. I have told so many drivers not to honk unnecesssarily. I have told so many bikers about helmet. I have asked so many drivers to wait for their turn at the toll gate. When I am abused for saying right thing not a single person comes forward. Even my office colleague who writes so much on the internet in social media said nothing when a bunch of people abused me for preventing them from throwing rubbish from their apartment. I know one thing for sure- internet warriors and keyboard warriors are no good to anyone. But I will keep raising my voice forever. Yes I have become numb to such news as we Indians do not value life and we dont protect those who raise voices.
