Ganga and Yamuna are 'personified'
by Shriniwas Kelkar on May 27, 2017 04:47 PM

Very strange arguments. So what happens when these two 'persons' meet? How come only 'one' survives? What happens to the 'inferior'? And when the survivors meet another 'person' called 'Brahmputra' both disappear and take up a different name? If one has to give way for 'faith', let it be restricted to a certain level only. Else the whole exercise becomes irrational.

linking of rivers from Ganga to Cauvery

I am surprised to see the objections to linking of rivers by environmentalists, who pose that they are for the betterment of people but in actual fact a deterrent to the poor farmers. Let us be practical, Farmer suicides in our country is in plenty and is mainly attributable to poor rainfall and improper storage facilities for water to help cultivation. They should educe the hardships of the Farmers & Tribals. Linking of rivers will make India Granary to the world. This step will also ensure that there is no drought in any part of the country and there would be enough food for all with better employment facilities. The Central Government should pass a law to Nationalise all the rivers in the country, whereby there will be no disputes with any of the States.
The environmentalists on the contrary should support Nationalisation as well as linking of rivers as their thoughts being expressed today are all shortsighted about the forests and villages getting drowned and Greenery being lost. They should understand that with the linking of rivers, we are creating more arable land to grow more farm products, trees & better green cover over large tracts of land, inland waterways for cheaper transportation and plenty of jobs which are a major need of the country. The courts should also view on this angle on cases filed by environmentalists, which seem to be working for some other peoples interest rather in the interest of the nation. PLEASE SUPPORT LINKING OF RIVERS.

There are traditional methods of storing and conserving water that were used for centuries but abandoned after independence when it was assumed that big dams would solve all problems. For instance, de-silting of village tanks. Anna Hazare became well-known as a result of his work in this area. Such steps are needed all over the country. Also, we need to consume less rice and more dryland grains like ragi. With such simple steps, the water problem can be solved and rivers can be spared, as well as forests.

River Linking

I really do not know, how to respond to this decision. Is this decision for Stalling River Linking Projects or for making improvements.
The Tone expressed in the write up is certainly disturbing. Probably, the author is anticipating lot of difficulties / hurdles in the process of getting the approvals.
Therefore, I always get a question, whether, the Courts should have any power on pronouncing a Sentence on the People Elected by People to Rule the Country. There is a Very Famous old Decision about Commercial Expediency, wherein, courts have unanimously held that, the Revenue Department is not comptent to make a decision on what would be "Commercially Expedient" because, they (Revenue Authorities) cannot have a Businessman's View Point. Extending the same Rule to Such Actions / Projects of enormous Public Importance, why the courts should pronounce or make comments on the functioning of the Government. Yes, it is possible and rather necessary, if it is affecting some particular section. But, not otherwise.
