Shri Atal Behari Vajpayee has made the famous remark that one gets elected on a "LIE" in the statement submitted to the EC. Today for the first time a MP has been disqualified on that count. Is he the only one or will the EC open up others involved for a similar offence. On top of it, the delay in deciding such cases is what prompts one to do so. Can there be a quicker route to finalise such cases?
It is said that every member of Parliament and legislatures starts his career with a lie, by claiming to have followed the election code. It is impossible for a candidate to contest an election and keep the expenses below the unrealistic limit prescribed by law. In the Raj Narain-Indira Gandhi case, Shanthi Bhushan emphasised the expenses incurred by Indira Gandhi as one of the six corrupt practices cited in the petition. The judge ignored it.
