Many considerations come into play in the choice of the presidential candidate. Before the advent of Modi, an eminent person who has no hopes of becoming the prime minister because of the prevalent electoral arithmetic used be offered the president's post as a consolation prize. Brahmins too adorned the presidential chair (Radhakrishnan, Giri,Shankar Dayal Sharma,Pranab Mukherjee). For every post there will be essential and desirable qualifications. Now the essential qualification seems to be RSS membership.

You hit the nail on the head by giving the example of Prathibha Patil. Fakruddin and Zail Singh were also no great shakes for the office they held. It is possible to choose an acceptable candidate with all the limitations we imposed on the process of choosing. The mistakes are realised only by hindsight.
