A discussion on this right is published shamelessly by Rediff in these columns with a picture of two Aadhaar cards with the numbers clearly visible. Shows how irresponsible this site is.

Right to privacy in respect of Aadhar scheme can be given up if the state is capable of guaranteeing data security and assuring the citizens that the highly personalized data such as finger prints, color of iris, personal details of the Aadhar holder will not fall into unscrupulous hands or anti national hands. When data collection and safe keeping is outsourced, how the government will ensure this? Not only this, everybody is forced to submit Aadhar particulars to be linked to the bank accounts even if several of them are not in receipt of government benefits or subsidies. Income tax department has forced all the tax payers to link Aadhar with pan numbers, without which, IT Returns cannot be submitted. Even mobiles are no exception to this. If someone hacks into the Aadhar database, he can get all details about an individual including his bank accounts and balances, income details, etc, which can be used to defraud the individual. Not only this, what guarantee is there that the party in power will not lay hands on the data base to extract details about their political opponents and go on a witch hunt. If an authority decides to frame an individual, getting personal details of the victim to corner the individual will be very easy with Aadhar information readily available on hand. This kind of an arrangement gives undue powers to the state to interfere in the personal affairs of an individual. If, indeed, Aadhar is to be made mandatory for every thing, there should be an autonomous body like EC which should be entrusted with the data collection and safe keeping. In case of hacking and data theft, exceptional penalties should be levied on the government and the affected person compensated in an exemplary manner. Is this government prepared to put in place these checks and balances?

Why doesn't the govt sign an indemnity bond with me at the time of filling up the Aadhar form, for say 100 crores in case my private information collected by it gets leaked. If govt has a real intention for protecting leakages, it should be to willing to sign up such a bond rather than only making selfie noises on media.
