Manual Scavenging
by VK Aggarwal on Jan 05, 2019 11:31 AM

WE feel proud in making statements and passing a number of laws without will to implement and thinking of resources required as we believe in automatic route. Clerks have to do independently without supervision, checks and controls. Authorities responsible enjoy luxury and parties or Tape Cutting for Page3 photo appearances and many engage special staff to supervise and follow up for this work.

Ministry of Urban development and Ministry of Railway should act fast for eradication of practice. Machinery for the purpose should be set up on priority by finances by eliminating beautification programs. Laws and publicity will not serve the real purpose and action is a nust.

Why there should be, it is albeit a job, upcorse menial but if I use suitable implements, nothing wrong and a dignity of labour; that too in a country of thugs, cheats, corrupt and debaucherers in majority that have no shame!

I agree to your point, but why are government agencies not involved or employed for this. It is only the private people who do these work and the government pays them.

You do have a point. But if its a job, will any Minister or Chief Engineer, dare stand there & see human being take a dip into overflowing/choked manhole, to clear it? Its mostly on account of Hotel people, household throw all kinds of trash into drains which result in blockage. Can Govt not identify the problem at the source & levy heavy penalty on such people & also make them clear the blocking? Unfortunately concerned Officials give permissions for money &never bother about proper functioning of drain lines. Victims are poor, hapless workers who have to clean such clogged drains. Most important NO TOWN PLANNING ENGINEER OR MUNICIPALITY ENGINEERS have ever given least thought to the fact that they are giving permission to construct minimum 20 apartments i
where 1 house was existing, thereby overloading the drain lines 20 times. Whatmore, builders construct one floor extra illegally & with connections at the right level &money, they can get away with paltry penalty, to punish poor manual scavengers, permanently. Unless we go deep down into the real cause of the problem we can never solve it. Why Central Govt, Parliament, President come into the picture when local Govt Officials flout rules at will? Do we have PMs & President to look at the drains? If proper punishment is given, at the right time to all the concerned, erring Officials, we will never have such problem.

A Kerala start up is developing a robot named "Bandicoot" for cleaning sewer lines. Kerala govt is supporting them with the aim to totally eradicate manual scavenging.

In terms of manual scavenging,
by piri on Jan 14, 2018 03:52 PM  | Hide replies

Gujarat is as yellow as Kerala is in this map !!

Vow !

Which means that the number of manual scavengers is very low in Gujarat !

But.......like Kerala, does it mean that open defecation is absent in Gujarat ??

As per the NSSO survey in 2015, 49 % (nearly half) of the entire population of Gujarat defecates in the open ! Whereas just 1.4 % of the total Kerala population does so !

If a similar map were to be drawn about open defecation, Gujarat would be dark red in colour compared to very pale yellow for Kerala !

Which further means that Gujaratis defecate and leave their excreta in the open for the sun, rain and wind to dispose it off !

That is Gujarat model development for you !

Do you mean to believe this data. If there is no rcruitment in scavenging in municipal/punchayat offices and construction of dry latrines are not done, it would be zero.

The states which have more number of villages - living in poverty - lesser knowledge in hygiene used to have more.
