There are Floating Booms (Pneumatic) and Oil Skimmers available with Coast Guard. Why the Booms have these not been used to contain the oil spill? They could have used Oil Skimmers, thereafter, to remove the oil.

Surprisingly the Chennai port and Ennore oil terminal not having the equipment viz. oil spill boom, oil spill skimmer and oil spill remover n chemicals. If coast guard also not carrying this it's a pity. Surprising age old method of removing clothes is on going. It has become late now that the oil is getting solidified and will go to the sea bottom now. Time they can get oil spill remover at this stage and clean the coast the least. These chemicals are readily available with local ship store suppliers if Nitin Mumbai!!

The properly removed and collected crude oil sludge has to to be sent to the country of origin through ship for proper disposal. It should not be dumped on Indian soil or Sea.

what is politician's margin not black but in white it is not scam this official money.
It is total shame that people are using buckets to clean the mess which should be done more professionally employing latest ships and gadgets, but since we have the least regard for environment damage this is less bothersome for the concerned authority or ministry.

Yes you are right. But they have used Coast Guard ship 'ICGS Varad and Helicopter as mentioned above. What matters here is how fast they could.

The ideal response would be using long lines of booms (floating barriers) to hem in the spill as soon as it occurs and then using super soppers and other suction equipment to retrieve the oil from the slick.
But this will be effective only if it is done without much delay.
All ocean going tankers of large oil MNCs are equipped with ready to deploy booms and suction equipment.
I am a Chennaiite. While it is good that NGT and other govt nodal agencies look for recovering the cost of cleanup from the ship companies, I guess there is a miss on impact on one vital item. In coastal area call Minjur, northern Chennai, TN govt has very large desalination plan that supplies thousands of litres of water every day for the city and nearby areas. While I hope the desal plant will save the consumer from getting oily/tar substances getting into the potable water, the cost of impending damage that the spill would do to the desal plant, if significant, should also be recovered from the ship companies.

The oil spill (which is reported to be about 20 MT) is too small to affect the intake of the plant. The plant will be monitoring its intake anyway.
