RK Nagar bye-poll - a prelude to elections
by R Venkateswaran on Dec 14, 2017 10:22 PM

Miss J Jayalalitha passed away a year ago and the result is the bye-election to the RK Nagar Assembly seat, which was once countermanded by the Election Commission for reasons known to all in Tamil Nadu. In the ensuing election, scheduled for December 21, will the activity like giving freebies, or buying votes at premium would not have stopped, but rather intensified, as the Election Commission might find it difficult to identify the ingenious ways the parties and political managers in Tamil Nadu work. Many poll managers might assume the role of vegetable vendors, iron (cloth pressing) walah, electrician, plumber, safai karamchari of the area, etc. and meet with the voters to influence their decisions by handshaking with them and sticking the Gandhi capped currencies. All parties are willing to go to any extent to show their strength.

DMK has no real stake in that constituency and should have permitted both AIADMK and Dinakaran to face the ballot boxes to show the voters as to who is more popular in Tamil Nadu. It seems BJP is trying to fish in the troubled waters and the deposit loss is a foregone conclusion.

The Election Commission might be keeping an undated order ready to be issued countermanding the elections another time due to large scale indulgence by candidates. Or, the BJP led NDA Government might issue an ordinance or pass a bill debarring a candidate from contesting the elections who are having corruption charges. This means Dinakaran is out.
