Madam Murthy, there are 10s of thousands of temples in India, in dilapidated condition. In many temples, the idols were stolen/lost & others do not have funds to maintain priests. Most of these temples are marvelous pieces of ancient Indian architecture, Science & Technology. Govt is engrossed in day to day problems & has no time for these beauties. Govt Officials who are supposed to make case study & present plan for revival/maintenance, are busy trying to please the Ministers. Govt will never hear the voice/concern of any common man & people like you (can be counted on our finger tips) alone have to come to the rescue of derailed India. Funds is secondary but more important is will & plan to protect these wonderful structures.

Local and invading armies...

The history of mankind has been turbulent. India is no exception. But local kigdoms fighting against each other is more about inept Kings or the ones who never had the support of the local populace. While the local wars were between Kingdoms that shared a philosophy and ideology, the invasions by the Moghuls or the Europeans were invariably with with an eye on wealth and often using a faith which became a tool in their hands. In the former case, cultural imperial was not involved.A culture has to evolve and not be imposed.

Ashokan rock edict

our friend Sunil Khilnani seems to be very disturbed soul. While he talks of the rock edict being a momento spread wide and far and accepted for over a thousand years as an icon of exceptional governance between 3BC and 7AD, when the marauding moghuls put the hapeless peace loving Hindus to the sword and create a tumult in an otherwise almost paradise like existence of the sub-continent when the whole of Europe still rested on trees, does not see the disadvantages of such a peaceful reign when the soldiers and Kshatriyas of the social strata actually forgot their martial-arts and succumbed to the horsemen with swords and gave rise to opportunistic politicking by the public in principle. He may do well to study and analyse history better than what is written by Anglicised Indians.

Granted, Ghazni, Ghori and later, Timur and then the Mughals came marauding into the Indian sub-continent. (7 AD ???)

But.........are you saying that the sub-continent was a paradise of peace before these marauders came ???

Really ??

Care to elaborate about that *peace* that prevailed till the 10th century C.E ?
