Gaurakshak, cow protection, cow shelters is all vote bank politics. Depends on the level of education the voter has, higher the level, more liberal he will be. Sadly that will take a couple of years for India or may be some decades. Yes Rediff is right, Sadly Cows are valued more than humans in India.

Rapid urbanization and population growth has eaten up forests and grasslands, so is the result that you see. The way Hindus respect the belief of Muslims and do not force them to eat pigs, same way they should also respect others belief and stop giving non sense arguments; but adamant always think that it is his birth right to disrespect and trouble others.

Respect all religions........but dont force beliefs of your religion on others...say for example Hindus dont eat beef so dont force others to stop eating beef.Some people dont follow any religion so what are you going to force them to do? its upto the individual.
The root of the problem of finding cows on city roads is mainly due to the fact that rapid & mindless urbanisation has left the Gochar land (the word itelf is the mentioned as such in land revenue records created from british and also earlier times and it means pasture land) is vanishing fast. The glaring example lies in the expansion of Ahmedabad city where around 70 villages have been merged into the Ahmadabad urban area, whereas the human beings living in those villages could keep their dwellings, the pasture lands which belonged to the cattle for centuries is now snatched away with concrete jungle and roads cropping on it. We think of resettlement of human beings while creating dams etc. but this animals do not have any rights and that is the reason they are seen on city roads, their owners now failing to come to grasp with changing times have no resources to redeploy themselves. Have we ever thought while residing in this new buildings that this land originally belonged to those mute animals and the logical reason for doing Vastu Shanti was due to the fact that we have taken away the life sustenance of many life forms by creating a dwelling for ourselves. The problem is gigantic and initiatives by few cannot solve it, however as suggested the taxation (from stamp duty-regn.)regime could create a financial instrument from which resources for rehabilitation of this mute animals could be created.
Cow worship etc are humbug.We were given caste surnames to advertise our craft or trade of practice so that those who needed that craft can locate that craftsman.These craftsmen lived together like we what we studied appreciatively as Industrial clusters in Italy.We made ugly casteism out of it. .Cows were asked to be respected to ensure milk for children and to the general populace as milk is one of the best food imaginable and is a need. Those who eat meat have been eating all sorts of meat.It is costlier than vegetarian food.So it is understood that the better off go for it and always go for it .All these murders ,vigilantism are all Law and order problem of the respective states, which in practice is might is right and is lawful disorder and unlawful order. They will make use of The Cows when they are Healthy, giving milk and Productive - They also use its dung a Fuel and Manure !!
When The Bulls are Strong, Young and in their Prime - They are used to Pull Bullock carts and for Ploughing with other activities.
But when Both Cows and Bulls become Old, Weak, Diseased, Disabled, Unproductive or Infirm - They will end up in S1aughterhouses !!
So The Owners of such Animals - Who do not Care for them when Ill Fate takes over - Must be Heavily Fined and Penalized by The Government of India and should be Booked for Unethical Treatment and Misuse of Animals for Selfish gains and Unilateral advantage.

Speaking of Cows is mere politics and for diverting the attention of people -
Growth of Cows/milch animals are the job of govt and it is being done since 70s and the govt achieved the top spot in the world for producing milk, allied products and become the biggest exporter wheras it was not talked much hither to. In big cities & towns people could have seen that large number of cattles are on busy roads and the Municipal authorities are receiving lot of complaints. Seldom those cattles are being impounded by authorities but without care.
