The Jodhpur airfield?
by V Nagarajan on Jun 14, 2016 04:32 PM  | Hide replies

The Jodhpur airfield which is with the Air Force now was constructed by the Maharajah. It is located adjacent to the place.

The Maharajah or the Maharani did not construct it. The British gave the concept, design and technical assistance. The money came from the usurious taxes imposed by the Rajah and Rani on the toiling commoners. Those commoners also toiled for the construction of the airport. Some materials, such as asphalt, came from England. The planes came from England, purchased with the revenue squeezed out of the impoverished masses.

The Maharaja just sat in his palace, eating, drinking, faxrting, copulating.......an intellectual pauper little better than a pig !

He could have just wasted all that money elsewhere for his pump and show instead of creating a permanent asset.

Blood, sweat, tears.....
by piri on Jun 14, 2016 12:49 AM  | Hide replies

........and shortened lives of millions of the underclasses went into building each of these monuments over the centuries.

And all that the ones who are identified by history as having built them - the rajahs and ranis and others, really did was to grab, loot, extort, slave run, kill, maim, eat, drink, copulate, eat more, drink more, copulate more..............................

The rajahs and ranis and nawabs and sultans and shahs and.......................a big bunch of vermin who have their names in history only due to the misplaced notions of grandeur and valour and whatnot that commoners have about fairy tales !

Indira Gandhi did few things in her lifetime that were right. But abolishing the privy purses that went to these *refuses* of history was certainly one among them.

And stopping with merely abolishing the privy purses and not confiscating all the vast assets held by them (amassed over the centuries through the blood, sweat and tears of millions among the underclasses) to the state exchequer was one among her numerous failures !

do you think present democracy and the politicians are better than them or worse than them. A ruler is a looter in the eyes of common man with their fore fathers genoracity . Now how you get reservations for the suffering of your fore fathers. free seats/ free food / free hostel even you speak against the country / fre free free.
Under stand the History and the culture. good article.

It took me some effort to decipher your message. My only reply is that I dont enjoy reservations (entitlements granted by the state) of any kind.

New hotels /buildings to have indian traditional architecture
by rajesh venkatraman on Jun 13, 2016 07:41 PM  | Hide replies

Why don't the govt ask all the 5 star hotels being built in all over india to have a traditional look like palaces when building new ones rather than having a tall skyscraper like in the western and US cities, we needto have hotels which depict indian culture and improve the lives of the locals by have art and culture team of various indian traditional art forms be it singing, dance, painting and architectural toys/gifts/memorabilas etc as most of them would be hand made and less tech used tomake them.

Beautiful comment, Rajeev.

Unfortunately, most Indians prefer western architecture. This is the sad reality.

Rude staff at Umaid Bhawan Museum
by Amit Azad on Jun 13, 2016 03:07 PM  | Hide replies

I had the chance to visit Umaid Bhawan Palace Museum with Family and friends. The staff is the most impolite and rude that I have come across in my travels not only in India but across the world. When I told them I will complain they promptly told me to go right ahead. All these stories that you are publishing are nothing but Public Relations stunts and do not reflect the pathetic state of affairs of the Jodhpur Royal Family

Easy to maintain difficult to build new.
by Atul Nayak on Jun 13, 2016 02:34 PM

As a princess or a member of the royal family it is always easy to take credit for the heritage monuments that were build by the erstwhile royal family and the local citizens. Since you are the owner of these properties maintaining them is the easier part as you can easily lease these properties to Hotel chains and collect rentals and also make them maintain the property for you and take credit for the same.

But when it comes to constructing some new properties it in not only difficult but impossible for these princely families as they do not have the funds nor the knack to set up a team to so the same.

Also they develop only those properties which they have lease out other properties lie in the same degenerating stage as they don't want to spend their rentals on repairing and restoring works.

Maharajas, Eton and Cambridge

They got educated there but never thought of bringing the local colleges up to that level when they were in power. They could have done a lot but didn't. And they claim descent from Lord Rama.

(I know our politicians are no better, possibly far worse!)

They were never in power the Congress made sure that they would not be another power centres, far far more popular then they. We should remember the sacrifice of the valiant Rajputs and their Queens who did Sati rather than fall into the hands of lecherous invaders from the Middle East. The World over Kings are given some room in the politics of that country, eg Thailand, England, Norway, Sweden, Spain. Here we have been taught to despise them

Here also they participate in politics: Congress or BJP. But my comment referred to the days when they ruled the place before 1947.
