How NOT to defend an Airbase from Terrorists
by Vijay Shivdasani on Jan 07, 2016 11:20 AM

Ask Ajit Doval--he must have learnt quite a few lessons! After getting actionable intelligence he boobed! No command and control, no Officer Incharge, avoidable loss of life, inept handling of operations!
Can this be condoned?

Where is the need for such articles ? There are no TRPs for rediff online. For heavens sake stop publishing such articles in the interest of security.

Typical Indians all theory no practical...bookworms. Where were you before the attack happened. Easy to seat comfortably in an a/c home and advise others and make few more bucks by sending these articles to online news portals and newspapers.

Too Much Gyan and boring to read

IMO the only fool proof way to defend the asset is use it against the enemy country. Even the army knows that. Attack is the best form of defence. Period.

Lessons learned, but will they be implemented?
by Ayon Pradhan on Jan 06, 2016 11:49 AM

The Saab Chaltha Hai Yaar attitude shines through again. What lessons were learned after the Mumbai attacks?

It is high time our political and security establishment realize that India is not facing garden variety terrorists but highly trained and motivated individuals who are able to operate effectively deep behind enemy lines.

Was the base properly secured during normal operations since it is so close to the border?

Has the Indian government asked Google and other such GIS mapping companies to blank out sensitive installations on their maps?

Were the defenders of the base equipped with proper rifles, optics, body armour and night fighting systems? Were they trained in close quarters combat? Was the Defence Security Corps put on high alert and all members armed when the alert was received?

Did the NSG and army regularly share knowledge and tactics about such attacks including the extensive use of IEDs?

Were micro UAVs and remotely piloted vehicles made available for perimeter surveillance and bomb diffusal?

What was the command and control structure for the operation? Who was in charge, and why was this person not the only one with the authority to announce end of operations to the media?

The establishment can seriously do a lessons learned exercise and fix these gaps. But more likely, they will wait for the next terror attack when they can give more hollow platitudes and benefits packages to the fallen.

Very simple

Cut the elephant grass in the area. Boundary wall should have some circuit, if touched or broken, alarm should buzz to indicate that the circuit is being tempered. There should be check at minimum three points (Three tier to check the identity of a person) before one enters the main premises. Elephant grass has to be cut at regular intervals and there should be check up from time to time with bullet proof tractors which once were used by KPS gill to flush out khalistani terrorists.
