Caste mobility
by Kannan S on Mar 01, 2016 03:01 PM

It is said that the Brahmins, when they are unable to sustain themselves economically, can revert to the means of Kshatriyas or Vysyas, meaning they can choose to receive nominal income from the government or go back to earning a livelihood through productive work. This is an expression that people who live by the norms of the Brahmins ( providers of free education to the society) are intrinsically self-sufficient and prosperous.

Likewise, it is also said that the Kshatriyas, who are unable to sustain themselves through the prescribed norms ( meaning that the limited remuneration received from the government is not adequate to meet their day to day expenditure) can also revert to the lifestyle of the Vysyas.

If downward mobility is permissible, it goes without saying that upward mobility will also exist. People who have earned enough and feel self-sufficient, can choose to lead a life of greater purpose for the well being of the society. The society, in turn acknowledges their contribution by according a social status, just like we are used to several government recognition and awards in the modern world.

Course of the Discourse in the Universities
by Kannan S on Mar 01, 2016 02:51 PM

It is true that Universities should be the place where students can discuss all subjects with an open mind. This does not seem to be happening in the case of the caste system - which is now driven by the desire to grab some benefits in the name of reservations.

The caste system has become one that will divide the Indian society and thus weaken it so that the Western thought can prevail and dominate. To a good extent, this has been propped up by the Colonial rulers. Without the British preparaing a Schedule of the castes and tribes in the Indian continent, would we have had this exclusive classification. The British should have done so with some ulterior motives - could be that helped to identify segments of the society that could be more vulnerable to Conversions and temptations offered in the form of Sponsored Education.

In reality, the society consists of two classes of people - educated and the non-educated. This is different from literate and non-literate. Only the non-educated class is referred to as the Sudras. In a ideal situation, everyone can become educated and thus come out of the class of Sudras.

People, after education, who lead a productive life, creating goods of value are Vysas. It is wrong to think that they are mere traders.

People who become prosperous and contended, choose to work for the welfare of the society with a nominal remuneration from the government. They are Kshatriyas. Not just warriors. Those who volunteer to teach the society are Brahmins

Caste System in Ancient India was a dynamic system
by aam admi on Feb 29, 2016 01:16 PM

In Ancient India,Individual had opportunities to rise from one caste to other depending upon his actions and deeds in life . Any many examples can be cited to support it , Even in one family, three brothers could be of different Caste, depending upon their profession. And obviously there was no hatred among different Caste holders.
But , the present Caste system is Static, there is no provision in Constitution to upgrade your Caste irrespective of your actions and job, and now with the reservations , people prefer to be in lower caste than to join uppper Caste, even upper Caste people are rushing to obtain lower Caste Certificate , to reap the benefit of Reservation.
An SC in 1947 remain SC even now , though He could be Scholar , A warrior or say General in Army, or a Justice in in High Court or in Supreme Court.
So the present system is static , Constitution should be amended to make Caste system to be dynamic and movement from lower to upper Caste and from UPPer Caste to lower Caste should be possible according to the deeds and actions of the individual.
