I couldn't believe when Central Committee of CPI (Maoist) broke the news of comrade Shridhar's untimely death a few days ago.

I first met Shridhar in late 2003 in Mumbai when I went there for making preparation for Mumbai Resistance, a four-day event organised parallel to World Social Forum. Subsequently I got opportunity to interact with him several times during my three-year stay in Mumbai. He was one among those who left an unfadable impression on me. He is one of those who impressed me a lot with their simplicity, hard work, intellect, worldview, intimacy and a finest heart that always beat for others.

He used to constantly update himself with scientific and technological developments, particularly those in the field of computer science. When I wanted desktop computer, it was Shridhar along with one of by beloved friends that forced me to buy a laptop...! They knew my nature of work - roaming the country always for coordinating left and democratic movements. He regularly supplied me with latest softwares.

I went to Mumbai for two days some two years back on my personal work. I couldn't meet him. I thought I would definitely meet him when I come to Mumbai next time. It didn't happen. Now I realise the blunder. I missed the opportunity to meet him for ever. His presence itself is great refreshment; it also reminds one of one’s social obligations and responsibilities.

My sincere red salute to the brave proletarian intellectual and mass leader...

How come all these staunch Communists don't want to emigrate to some Communist paradise? Even Comrade Jyoti Basu educated his son Chandan in USA, the bastion of capitalism.

You and I may not agree with his political views but the fact is that he was trying to help the poor, exploited tribal people of Vidarbha. Could he do that by leaving the country permanently? Sometimes we try to be witty but fall flat on our face!

The marxist version is a very big Utopia and it is very difficult that anybody will put the benefits of struggle before his ambitions. (Self actualisation is a big mirage). That is the reason for the failure of marxism.
What we are seeing now is the diametric opposite side of capitalism with greed and avarice the main drivers. The political leadership and bureaucracy actually giving it a helping hand.
What we need is a mix of both these isms in India with a liberal cultural environment. The Congress couldn't do it because it was corrupt and dynasty oriented. We have to see the alternatives in the future, assuming the present leadership represents the right wing in the political spectrum.
