To open ears of Britishers, Bhagat Singh agitated in the then parliament, Govt. does not listen to peaceful agitation. Reservation policy needs correction, but will take many sacrifices.

English education and employability
by Uday Sharma on Sep 07, 2015 09:15 PM  | Hide replies

If only Aakar Patel had read the reports on how many of Indian graduates with all those Engineering degrees are actually employable in industry. Does learning English from class-1 really help?

yes it helps in many ways as in Gujarat English is second language, wherein world only understand English as a first language. And there government school education is not good enough till the higher level.

Yes, it does.

For starters, most Gujarati workers in the unorganized sector earn just about Rs. 80/- to Rs. 120/- for a full day's work.

The proportion of such workers in the total workforce is much lesser in most other states than in Gujarat.

This is so mainly because Gujarat has one of the highest proportions of workers which is illiterate or nearly illiterate.

Read the National Sample Survey statistics and find out.

If only you could explain what has that to do with English being taught at primary level. Also, how many of these workers are from outside Gujarat?

Whether the proportion of the immigrant workers in Gujarat is high or low, the fact remains that a very large segment among them earn between Rs. 80/- and Rs. 120/- per day for a full day's work in conditions that are far from ideal !

This fact is mapped in several surveys (NSS as well as surveys by the ministries of labour and human development).

Come to Cochin in Kerala and you will find many Gujaratis working in shops as assistants for wages ranging between Rs. 400 and Rs. 600 per day.

That is the difference between grass roots development and pseudo development !

PATELS/GUJ. MUST BECOME LITERATES FIRST.RESV'TN NOT ANSWER
by damodaran mohan on Sep 07, 2015 06:50 PM  | Hide replies

Having spent half my service life in Gujrat and Saurastra I can say with authority that education more so higher education get least priority in the state. Parents and their children alike are more of business bent of mind and the school children are satisfied with learning rudimentary commercial/business arithmetic for earning their millions in business and stock market. So they end up either as a blue collar workers in small cottage enterprises or as businessmen, financial services providers in Insurance, stock markets etc. Academic bent of mind and aptitude for higher learning is totally absent.People in North India will be surprised that till the 1990s in Saurashtra region ,leave aside English most of the people wouldn't know even proper Hindi !Long and short of the story is the standard of education, English/Hindi proficiency etc. are among the poorest in the country and hence their mobility into IT world and elite services is next to NIL. Their main mobility has been of past of as businessmen in Mumbai, Kolkatta, Chennai etc. and no more. Most of them are ‘angootha chaaps’. No wonder the Patels inspite of their prosperity now are unable to compete in college admissions and elite services like IAS and others services. Neither are they fitting into the IT industry of Banagluru,Cyberabad etc. Moral of the story ? Every Gujrati cannot become PM. Patels/Guj must become literates first like Akar Patel and improve their educational background. They just don't des

by raman govindan on Sep 07, 2015 03:56 PM

during quit India movement several leaders removed their children from the schools on the direction of the congress leaders. those children paid the price. similarly Gujarath has taken to Hindi as the national language and gives lesser importance to English language. that had also taken the toll. plus the people of the state are adept in business and give lesser importance to getting high ranks in entrance examination to professional colleges and do not sweat as the students of the other states. because most of the Patels are comparatively more prosperous than the others, may be they, did not insist on the OBC status all these yeatrs.

lack of English education?
by Ramesh Koushik on Sep 07, 2015 03:40 PM

The problem of starting English teaching late in a student's life is not confined to Gujarat alone. It is also true in most of our states(including the ones Mr Patel mentioned as fore runners ). Even in states like Tamil Nadu, according to press reports, only about 20% of the graduate Engineers are able to enter good jobs
