The key issue is ability to pick and choose a citizen for privileges/punishment. Once an organization or the state has everybody linked to a common number in a digital economy,it is very easy to manipulate anyone behind the scenes as any one who refuses to get manipulated will face the full wrath/weight of the govt. Access to debit/credit card can be blocked, phone calls monitored, travel can be curtailed with a no fly list, the very existence of the person can be questioned.. all this on a one to one basis where the citizen if put against the entire machinery at the click of a button at the first ask by a vested or corporate interest outside the purview of the courts or the legal system..Sytematic dismantling of the checks and balances in the system will happen and anyone who questions it will have to face the full wrath and suffer without any legal recourse.

No doubt Govts intentions may be genuinely good, but in India off late manipulators/corrupt employees/antisocialelements are on rampage and anything could be ddeciphered even without your knowledge from your confidential personal data from banks/your computer

Any innovative measure likely to be introduced by Govt ,even if it is in the interest of public, proper fore thinking to be done before introduction taking all precautionary measures and not to cause more inconvenience & trouble to public making public run from pillar to post.it is like PAN Cards & Aadhar cards linking.when Aadhar cards issued in beginning it was not mandatory and names mentioned as per convenience of the software that time abbreviating first two names mentioning third name only for want of space, whereas PAN card full name mentioned. Now to link both names should be same and public have to get Aadhaar redone again,Why can't Govt do needful not to cause hardship to crores of people by accepting and linking by doing necessary adjustments in software itself to accept once Aadhaar number mentioned

In the 2000 odd words this man has written, at the end I was unable to understand what his beef is about Aadhaar. I have an Aadhaar no. I have not given one bit of information more than what was not already in any no. of databases either with the Govt. or even private bodies. When I went to USA they have my IRIS scan and finger prints. At any rate finger prints can be obtained in any no. of ways if a baddie really wants it.
The opposition to Aadhaar is simply for the sake of opposing something. We have successfully adopted EVMs for more than a decade without any problems. Many advanced countries don't have them. Should we give up EVMs just because some other countries don't have them?
The APEX court must be told that if people want Govt. benefits they must subject themselves to some reasonable checks to identify them without duplication.

It is not about finger prints or iris scans.. But the method used to collect the same by force.. For instance, to say you would be deprived of your scholarship or pds if you do not have aadhar... Anything by compulsion is unacceptable and autocratic.. I strongly oppose aadhar..Am i not a citizen of India if I do not have aadhar... This is ridiculous and uncalled for..

these oldies and the deciders do not know the value of identity in the present circumstances. There is nothing secret in this India, the whole road if not the extension where one lives knows about you and the family. The local police station has collected whereabouts of every one. There is nothing secret left in this world. Let us have the Aadhaar which will make our life easy and simple. Stop looking everything with jaundiced eye dear oldies and column writers! When one goes abroad every country takes your finger prints, Iris picture, but no one opposes, but why when the Govt does the opposition? Enough lets move one.

If you want to make Aadhar "compulsory", go ahead and do it, but make the enrolment easy and simple. Citizens should not have to run from pillar to post. The entire process of enrolment should be done at the doorstep of the enrolled persons, and it should not be necessary for them to go to places far away from their places of residence or workplace. It should be ENSURED THAT NOT A SINGLE RESIDENT IN INDIA, AND NOT A SINGLE INDIAN ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD IS LEFT UN-ENROLLED -- because such un-enrolled persons might end up for all practcal purposes as "nonpersons" or "unpersons" (a la George Orwell's “1984”). Aadhaar is not "doubleplusgood".

Aadhar

I read the article carefully and the comments. The commentators, to me it seems are either biased, seeing from one angle of the problem and thus over-simplifying the complex issue or simply arrogant.

No doubt Aadhar has a lot of benefits. Transmision of Govt.benefits to the needy of the society without middle man is one of them. National identity is another.

But the issues that the author is raising is undeniably important.
1. The program must have legal identity authorised by citizen/ Parliament.
2. The illegal data monitoring by external agencies is a vital issue compromising with the sovereignity of Nations. Snowden has precisely shown it.
3. If some external agencies/ Non-nationals are giving support- that should be precisely codified. It seems that is not happening.

We, the Indian citizens must rise to the issues. well, If AAdhar has to stay for its benfits - its Ok but that should be so water tight against data snooping. Is it possible if we keep the data on cloud!!!

Aadhar, as things stand looks a good option to give identity to all legal citizens. But concerns on data being misused?-- Well now all of us know that in US,people have voluntarily accepted a microchip size of rice grain, to be inserted on their forhead or right hand which carries all data. All these are good in intention and actual use.Problem comes when wrong hands take control of data. There is a prophecy in Bible in Revelations 13:16"And he causes all, the small and the great, and the rich and the poor, and the free men and the slaves, to be given a mark on their right hand or on their forehead, and he provides that no one will be able to buy or to sell, except the one who has the mark, either the name of the beast or the number of his name-666 " This scenario is frightening indeed,if any nation comes under control of an evil power and all data of citizens are there on the press of a button.
