Obvious what goes down the drains
by jaideep shirali on Jun 20, 2015 08:26 PM

It's the citizen's money that goes down the drain, every year, rain water does not. As per the BMC's own figures, about 70% of its revenues go towards administration costs including salaries. Of the remaining 30%, corruption might possibly leave a few crores to be actually utilised for the city. The standing committee, which comprises politicians of all parties, clears dubious deals and rewards blacklisted contractors with fresh deals, so this blaming each other is just play acting. The BMC, in simple terms, exists only for its staff and the corporators. There is no question of anybody being punished for corruption or negligence. The BMC head during the 2005 deluge was promoted and became Chief Secretary of Maharashtra, when atleast 1000 citizens died in the 2005 deluge, he casually said he was not to blame for anything. Unless we bring down the BMC's size and reduce political intervention, nothing can change. And this pattern will get repeated everywhere in India, till both the babu and the neta are made answerable to the citizen.

Great Challenge
by Venu Kosigi on Jun 20, 2015 07:19 PM

1. Generally Heavy Rains occur when flooding is in process (ie ocean tide is increasing - High tide).
3. Hence excess water over land cannot drain out into sea. As earth rotates and tide is becoming low (Ebbing) the water recedes.
3. Further most of the 'NATURAL DRAIN' paths are blocked in Mumbai and other cities due to constructions.
4. Even though the drains are cleaned, due to high tide and blocking of natural drain paths Mumbai and other cities get flooded when it rains 150 to 200 mm in 24 hrs.
5. So its Man created and Nature created challenge which we have to solve.

rains continue to batter
by maria mascarenhas on Jun 20, 2015 04:04 PM

Thanks to the corrupt politicians and companies. This problem is because of their stupidity and greed to promote some company or the other in which they have a share. We did not have these problems as long as the shoulders of the roads were not paved with concrete and interlocking tiles, they claim that there is a problem of ground water getting depleted. How do they expect it not to when there is no way for the water to be soaked by the ground? The rivers and lakes can take only take in water as much as they can hold and when they can\'t they are gonna throw it right back into your face and homes, this problem is not going to be sorted out no matter how much they clean the nullahs and drains or whatever the stupid politicians are saying they are cleaning, unless the concreted and paving blocks are removed. Probably the common man will have to do it themselves and show the politicians and municipalities how stupid they are and how they are wasting our hard earned money.

The way MET department could not predict the possibility of heavy rain they cant predict rain today. infact rain has subsided ( at 3 p.m.). I think Govt should close the department and outsourse the job to agencies like skymet

When Media persons are asking the victims about their problem, the victim should mention the Corporator's name loudly and the Corporator's inability to solve the problem for so many years. Victims should make him ashamed.....
