Yoga is the total science helping human beings to evolution, union of self to cosmos. Patanjali Yoga, or Hatha Yoga has 8 folds. Assuming Postures and Pranayam as Yoga is misleading. It starts with Yama and ends with Samadhi. It builds mind and body generating enough potential in a man for the union of wo/man with cosmos. Practicing only Postures and Pranayam may lead to creation of Ravanas.

Modi is doing it just to create an aura for himself. His job is to govern not do or popularize Yoga. He was elected to bring achhe din to the people of this country. His govt has been a total farce.

You seem to be wrong, Modi is a leader, he is to lead the people. As Yoga imparts health- both physical as well as mental, and as the country's health depends on the health of the citizens, if the leader leads the people through Yoga, we shall understand that he is doing his duty. Why he pitched for the people of the world doing Yoga - answer is simple, let the world be hale and healthy. In the process if he gets world's attention, let him get it. After all it is not an act of giving away our land to Pakistan, just to get international fame, as our good Nehru did!!!!
Yoga is universal. There is nothing religious about it. Its sad part that it was never popularised years back. It would have saved the government crores of rupees as it would have kept the citizens health and hearty. Things which are cheap and beneficial for mankind and which indians have known for centuries have always been in the background. Thank goodness it is the western nations who have popularised yoga.
