The Ernakulam district Panchayat
by piri on Jul 12, 2015 12:55 PM  | Hide replies

has now appealed to the state sponsored *Kudumbasree* (an organization that facilitates the growth and success of various cottage industries) to join it in trying to teach proper sanitation habits to the tens of thousands of immigrant labourers who have come from various North Indian states to work in the industrial belts of Udgyogamandal, Perumbavoor, Angamaly, etc. in the district.

Local communities have long been complaining to the authorities about the sheer ignorance of almost every one of these illiterate and poor migrants on sanitation and hygiene. Despite the provision of waste disposal facilities by both the civic bodies as well as their employers, the migrants tended to litter refuse wherever they stay. And horror of horrors, some of them even began defecating in the grounds before their places of stay just to avoid the bother of having to flush the toilets provided to them by their employers !!

The local communities, who have been very patient with migrants who have so far refused to learn to use the sanitary facilities provided to them (actually, errant employers were forced by local communities to make sufficient provisions of housing and sanitation for their migrant workers), have now petitioned the district and block panchayats to commence training of the migrants in matters of sanitary hygiene and waste management and also avoid the use of paan. Besides littering, many of the north Indian migrants also spit paan all along their path to their places of work.

This scenario is just one more manifestation of the immense contrast between the kind of gross exploitation and lack of human development that exist in everyone of the North Indian states (which are attempted to be covered under talk about crony capitalist give away models of development masquerading as develoopment) and the kind of true, basic and sustainable and equitable model of development that has characterized Kerala society in the past half century.

Don't talk non-sense. As a Keralite and staying in eastern & northern parts of the country for over 50 years now, I can assure you that this kind of generalized comments do not reflect the true position prevailing. Yes compared to South, Eastern (not North as generalized by Keralites for all those living north of the Vindhyas) parts of the country are lacking in sanitation. This is a fact. But the labourers you are talking about are all migrants and illegal entrants from Bangla Desh. A corrupt system at the b order has allowed these people to cross the border by paying a few rupees to the BSF personnel. Bangla Desh is very poor in all fields of hygiene and this reflects the attitude of the migrant labour.

I did not suggest that there were no Bangladeshis among the migrant labourers living in Kerala, did I ??

I only said that there were migrant labourers (who come from very poor families and are illiterate or barely literate) from various north Indian states.

And that is true !

In fact, in a survey done in 2014 in Ernakulam district, Oriyans lead the count followed by men from Jharkhand. Bengalis (Bangladeshis) were third in the list.

And in Mattancherry, Broadway and Fort Cochin, there are large contingents of poor Gujaratis working as shop and factory assistants for the Marvadis and Gujjus.

It may be convenient to focus only on the Bangladeshis, since they are either illegal immigrants or perceived to be illegal immigrants. But they are not the most numerous group among the 25 lakh plus migrant labourers in Kerala.

Vow!

Are you suggesting that only Eastern India lacks in sanitation and North India is better ????

You dont read at all, do you ??

Leave aside reports and articles that are numerous enough and which show how horrendously woeful sanitation and sense of hygiene are among North Indians in general are and how horrendously poor water supply (drinking water as well as that for sanitation) remain there to this day.

Read what the various state governments and the central govt themselves have to say about the situation !!

Read the reports of the Union ministries of rural development, panchayati raj, women and child welfare, urban development, etc and find out for yourself !

Compare the situation in Kerala with those prevailing in Jharkhand, Chattisgarh, Orissa, Bihar, M.P, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, U.P...and see for yourself !!

Aren't most of these states north Indian ones??

Read a little in detail before trying to discover things !

How have you taken up this heavy responsibility ? Of deciding which religions are truly Indian and which are not ?

You talk of peace over hatred - please follow it in the rest of your own message.

Well, there are now
by piri on Jul 12, 2015 10:30 AM  | Hide replies

more than 25 lakh immigrant labourers working in Kerala for wages ranging from Rs. 400/- to Rs. 800/- per day. These immigrants chiefly come from Orissa, Jharkhand, Chattisgarh, M.P, Bihar and less now from T.N, A.P, etc.

And yes, there are immigrant labourers from the so called developed states of Maharashtra and Gujarat !

Now, how did their number cross 25 lakhs (which constitutes nearly 8 % of the Kerala population) ??

Only because the states from where they come from pay Rs. 80/- to Rs. 150/- per day for similar work !!

And what about those in Kerala who employ these half starved and illiterate immigrants from those north Indian states ??

They are very happy to have them since the local labourers (malayalis) would have to be paid at least 20 to 50 % more for unskilled as well as skilled work ! Moreover, many of them are working in the Persian gulf and elsewhere for higher savings !

It would be very interesting to see what these immigrant labourers would have to say about the hyndu....muxlim.....hyndu....muxlim....chrittin.....hyndu....offal that is all what eternally frustrated politicians such as Muralidharan have to talk about !!

contrary to your claim , we see so many young people form south including Kerala , who are working in Delhi at meager salary of 4000 to 5000 per month or may be a little more.

South India, unfortunately for you, is not a homogenous entity !

The South has Kerala, which is highly advanced in terms of human development.

And the south also has A.P, Telengana, Karnataka and T.N (to a lesser extent) whose human development record is only slightly better than those of the North Indian states !

And just how many Malayalis (not Tamilians or telugus, mind you) did you see working in Delhi for Rs. 4000/- to Rs. 5000/- per month ?

Any idea ?

25 lakhs, where did you get this number ? and where they are employed ? can you elaborate ?
It appears a false statement.

Oh, little oaf, you are back again with your lack of reading ??

Forgot that not everyone is as unread as you ?

Go this very instant to the website of the Union ministry of labour or to that of the state ministry of labour and look up information on migrant labour in Kerala !!

Read !!

And read in some detail !!

There is a big world out there beyond your hyndu....muxlim.....hyndu....muxlim......!!

A world closer to what life actually is for the great majority of commoners and the world of struggles associated with it !

Read and find out from varied sources !

Where are they employed ??

Shall we debate on that ??

Or should we wait till you have checked up the information I referred to ??

Kerala has no experience of Muz rule
by Murali Krishnan on Jul 12, 2015 08:13 AM  | Hide replies

Kerala is the only state where Muz did not rule so Keralites do not have much experience of Muz rule. They only have a small scale experience during Malabar rebellion (Mapila Lahala) and raids of Tipu Sultan of Mysore.

Once Keralites experience they will understand.

The Muslim League is in coalition in the government half the time. Does that not count ?

Or are you talking of the distant past; where there was little rule of law, or human rights, or even enclosed toilets. There is no point using the barbarism of 200 years ago to guide our conduct today; it risks pulling us back to the past if we try to even the scores;

There are no winners in that sort of game.
