Laxman's common man is a long suffering but silent spectator of a thousand irritations to which an ordinary Indian is subjected. It is the common man's wife who raises her voice occasionally in protest.

You are partly right, as both his wives are Kamala. The 1st was Kamala Laxman (dancer), whom he divorced. Later, he married Kamala, an author.
though he is known for his cartoons he is novelist short story writer.He worked in free press journal along with Balthakare as cartoonist later shifted to Times of India Laxman published numerous short stories, essays, and travel articles, some of which were collected in The Distorted Mirror (2003). He also wrote the novels The Hotel Riviera (1988) and The Messenger (1993), the short-story collection Servants of India (2000), and an autobiography, The Tunnel of Time (1998). In addition, numerous collections of Laxman’s cartoons have been published. In 2005 he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilian honour.

He also produced a TV serial about the bureaucracy in Indian government.
